About Joshua

I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with my B.S. in Mathematics in 2016 and then with my M.S. in Mathematics in 2019. My educational journey there focused on weaving theory with applications; I pursued traditionally pure subjects such as real/complex analysis, abstract algebra and differential geometry while also gaining a firm foundation in computer programming, numerical methods and mathematical modelling.

Since then I have spent several years working as a private tutor, serving students of a diverse array of backgrounds and disciplines. This has ranged from middle and high school students seeking to improve in algebra, trigonometry and precalculus, to freshman college STEM students gaining their first exposure to advanced mathematics and programming courses, to upper division mathematics and engineering majors seeking to gain expertise in niche and specialized topics. Along the way I have learned to advance my own knowledge in a broad variety of domains outside of my own area of expertise. Being an autodidact has been critical for taking on new and unexpected challenges.

About the lesson

My approach focuses on developing an intuitive understanding of the underlying concepts. By engaging the student's problem-solving abilities we come to an appreciation of the conceptual underpinnings of the subject, which clarifies the meaning and purpose of the calculations and formulae that the student is expected to master. Ultimately, proficiency with the material and the ease of application will be enhanced once this foundational understanding is laid down.

I place an emphasis on understanding seemingly complex topics in simple terms, with clear visual explanations. I cover a diverse array of topics, from high-school algebra to college level calculus and linear algebra courses, to numerical computation and introductory computer science, to advanced upper-division and first-year graduate courses in pure mathematics, including real analysis, abstract algebra, differential geometry among many others.
