About Nick

With over 13 years in the civil engineering industry—leading infrastructure projects in road, rail, airports, and bridges—I bring practical expertise to every lesson.

I’ve spent 20+ years teaching in UK colleges and universities, including 12 years as a Principal Lecturer in Civil Engineering at a top UK university. I hold a Master’s in Digital Education (2023), ensuring my online teaching is modern, effective, and engaging. I have an Enhanced DBS Certificate.

Over the 2025/26 academic year, my BTEC and T‑Level Construction students improved from Fail/Pass predictions to Merit outcomes and students on HNC and Degree Apprenticeships achieved mark increases of +25% to +46%. I also supported postgraduate learners through challenging MSc referral work. These results show my track record in helping learners at every stage make significant progress and achieve their goals.

I’m a married father of two, with a Portuguese wife and a speedy (and very cute) lurcher dog. I’m passionate about helping others grow—whether through engineering, coaching, or teaching. Outside of work, I enjoy hockey, cycling, tennis, padel, and travelling to explore new cultures and cuisines.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first became interested in Civil Engineering at 17, drawn to a career that combined teamwork, problem‑solving, outdoor work, and variety from day to day. It turned out to be the perfect choice — challenging, rewarding, and full of opportunities to learn.

At 25, I spent two years volunteering as an engineering tutor in Zanzibar, Tanzania. That experience completely changed my career direction. I discovered how much I enjoyed helping people learn, grow, and gain confidence, and realised that teaching was something I was even more passionate about.

Since then, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time teaching in UK colleges and universities, as well as the private tutoring I’ve continued to do. Supporting learners one‑to‑one, helping them overcome challenges, and seeing their progress remains one of the most fulfilling parts of my professional life.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My main focus is tutoring Civil Engineering and Construction Management subjects, including maths, supporting learners from Level 3 through to university level. I enjoy helping students understand the technical principles that underpin the built environment, and I aim to make complex ideas feel clear, practical, and relevant by drawing on my experience as a Chartered Civil Engineer. I enjoy any topic where I can help a learner make sense of something that once felt overwhelming — that moment of clarity is what makes tutoring so fulfilling.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes — I had a few teachers at school and university who made a real difference to me. They were excellent communicators and genuinely cared about their students. What stood out was the time and effort they invested, often going above and beyond what their job required. Their support showed me the impact a dedicated teacher can have, and it’s a big part of what inspired me to follow a path into teaching and tutoring myself.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe a good tutor needs a blend of subject expertise, clear communication, patience, and genuine care for the student’s progress. Strong technical knowledge is essential, especially in Civil Engineering and Construction, where students rely on accurate explanations and real‑world context. But expertise alone isn’t enough — a tutor must be able to break complex ideas down into simple, manageable steps and adapt their approach to each learner’s needs. A good tutor listens carefully, creates a supportive environment, and helps students build confidence as well as competence.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as a tutor came from a college student whose attendance suddenly started to drop. At first, I assumed he had lost interest or stopped trying. When I eventually spoke with him, I discovered the reality was completely different: his home situation had changed, his older brother had returned, and the family’s sleeping arrangements meant he was exhausted and no longer had a quiet space to study. It was a powerful reminder never to judge a student by what you see on the surface — most learners genuinely want to succeed, but life can make it difficult.

This understanding has also been shaped by my own two children, who are now grown up. One has ADHD and the other autism, and supporting them through their learning journeys taught me how important patience, empathy, and flexibility are. Every student has their own challenges, strengths, and ways of processing information. Giving them the benefit of the doubt and taking time to understand their situation can make all the difference.

That experience continues to influence the supportive, non‑judgemental approach I bring to tutoring today.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the main challenges in Civil Engineering, Construction and maths is that many students initially lack confidence, especially when facing technical concepts like structural behaviour, surveying, or engineering maths. These topics can feel abstract, so I focus on helping learners understand the underpinning ideas by making them as visual and practical as possible—using sketches, real‑world examples, and clear step‑by‑step reasoning. Students also come with very different levels of prior knowledge, so identifying gaps and rebuilding understanding from the ground up is essential. These challenges have shaped my tutoring style into one that prioritises clarity, confidence‑building, and helping students truly “see” how engineering works.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a real passion for teaching, and I’ve found that its impact is always strongest when it’s connected to a subject you genuinely care about. For me, that’s Civil Engineering and Construction. I enjoy helping students understand how the built environment works, and I find it incredibly rewarding to break down complex ideas and make them feel clear and achievable. Teaching is at its best when enthusiasm is shared, so combining my love of education with a subject I’m already passionate about allows me to support learners in a way that feels both meaningful and authentic.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I believe I’m a Superprof Ambassador because I combine strong subject expertise with a genuinely supportive, student‑centred approach. As a Chartered Civil Engineer, I make complex ideas practical and easy to visualise, and I work hard to build confidence in learners who may be returning to education or facing personal challenges. My tutoring is shaped by years of teaching in colleges and universities, as well as personal experience supporting my own children with ADHD and autism, which has taught me the importance of patience, empathy and flexibility. I’m reliable, organised and fully invested in each student’s progress, which is why I’m proud to represent Superprof.
