About Gala
Gala Semenova is an award-winning self-taught Fine Art Portrait Photographer who lives and works in San Diego, California. She was born in Tula, Russia in 1981 and relocated to the States in 2009. In her art Gala is after the freshness and wonder of the spirit. She recognizes inner beauty and resilience in every human being and reflects it by capturing the true spirit of a person, amplifying and revealing something personal. With each portrait, she aims to reveal the vulnerability inside to allow space for recognition, healing, and empowerment. Gala’s work is inspired by colors, emotions, and feelings. Her interests are in the visual study of common human experiences like self-acceptance, love, and personal and collective traumas that are shared by society. Gala believes that her art can change people’s lives for the better by inviting more hope, love, and awakening. Recently a Single Image Winner of an International photography award from British Journal of Photography and 1854, Female in Focus 2022 which has been established to champion the work of exceptional women photographers from across the globe and directly combat gender inequality in the photography industry.

Hold My Hand. I Will Walk You Through
Studying with a working artist is a unique opportunity to achieve your photographic goals much faster with less amount of struggle. I have been there. I have had tons of questions and just a few answers. I have had times when I did not touch my camera for two years because I was creatively uninspired and didn’t ask anyone for help.
I tutor because your goals matter, your time is limited, and your potential is boundless. Working with photography for over 20 years I have had many trials and errors, periods of doubting myself and feeling uninspired, stuck, and bored with it, not knowing what I like and what I want to master. Today, with all my experience I know that I didn’t have to lose so much time trying to navigate those times on my own. It is always better when someone can hold your hand and show you the way. I always appreciate opportunities to share my knowledge and love of media arts with others.
I've taught teens and adults. People have told me they appreciate how I simplify complex topics with patience, humor, and practical advice. We'll cover material at your pace and in such a way that it immediately applies to your needs and interests.
Remember, that to be a great artist is a journey and not a destination!
It’s OK if the word “exposure” or “aperture” doesn’t say much to you!
I can get you over the hurdle of photographic terms and concepts that can feel foreign and counter-intuitive. I’ll demystify the terms like aperture, f/stop, depth of field, ISO, etc., and help you associate characteristics and uses for each setting.
It’s OK if you feel confused and struggle to take an image you like!
Whether you shoot with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a point-and-shoot, or a smartphone, a solid foundation in the fundamentals of composition will fuel your growth as an artist. I will share how to use the color to your advantage as a tool for creating the mood of the story.
It’s OK if your lighting sucks!
We’ll start with awareness and appreciation of light, where to find various kinds, and what to do with what you’ve found. Also will understand how we can use it creatively.
It’s OK if your skin tones look like an Oompa Loompa!
Every image (primarily digital) needs to undergo some editing process so it can look the way you want. In my art practice, I only work with Adobe Photoshop and Capture One. Capture One is the #1 software if you want to work with colors as a pro. I can share a simple algorithm to help you create your masterpiece or we can dive deep into the ocean of knowledge and study advanced color editing.
It’s OK if you don’t know how to take beautiful self-portraits!
I have received many photo awards for my self-portraiture and will be happy to share everything I have learned by doing it myself.
It’s OK if you compare yourself to others!
Only creating art through YOUR lens or capturing moments in time in a non-traditional and alternative way sets you apart from other photographers. I will create a space for you and help you understand yourself as an artist and start creating photographs that evoke strong emotion and compel thoughtful appreciation.
