About Andres

I am a passionate musician with a BA in contemporary music. I love to perform in front of people as much as passing my knowledge and make my students move and feel the same passion as I have for music. I travel very often for gigs around the world for both small venues and music festivals, at the same time I enjoy giving music lessons while travelling, there's no excuse for me to keep engaging students no matter where I could be. It's been 7 years now since I start giving lessons for people of different ages and levels from everywhere in both English and Spanish, during this time I started to do music composition for film as well, you can find some credits with my name on IMDb.

I come from the Latin American rock and Spanish classical music background so I will begin with teaching proper finger-style (classic position) and pickup style in order to be versatile on any kind of guitar. we'll be using exercises to gain agility that I still use up to this day covering every technique (Rest-stroke, arpeggios, legatos, triads, hammer on, pull off etc), which also helps basic reading knowledge, Theory wise. Then will be adapting the sessions according to the student tastes and requirements, going towards blues, salsa rhythms, ear training and improvisation) ideally going to the next level (scales, arpeggios and music reading/writing). We can discuss about composition, working with other instruments, guitar duets, gigs etc and we'll be achieving fast improvement going straight to learning chords and performing popular tunes always minding the right hands/body position. You'll have a casual and fun mentor 100% guaranteed, I want you to feel comfortable and confident so that you can ask everything you want to know. I'm willing to empower you to express your full potential and discover your own musical language and style. Not least, each class you will receive a tutorial video with the key points of our session so that you can continue practising in your spare time. That's the key to success.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I grew up in a musical environment that allowed me to have a very deep closeness from a very young age, especially with the guitar and the piano. I've always felt a very special affinity for the arts in general, so even though I went to drama school for reasons more related to my intellectual and personal growth, music has always accompanied me and has been the voice of my essence to convey different experiences of life while enrich cinematographic and theatrical projects, composing, musicalizing, etc. I am currently working on my own musical project of latin rock and soul music and besides that I love inspiring musically sensitive people through teaching.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

My day always has a musical transition from morning to afternoon. starting with music that helps me energize and recharge with a positive vibe. Like with reggae and salsa music, I love Bob Marley's music and all the classics from the Fania All Stars that have accompanied me all my life. The afternoon usually combines very well with either the sun rays or the rain with jazz and soul, I will always have at least one song by Aretta Franklin or Etta James every day on my playlist. and of course The rock that will never die. Especially with English rock classics. At the moment I have a loop with Take me out of Franz Ferdinant since I recently played it in a gig and I can't get it out of my head.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The most fascinating thing that can happen in a music session, especially the first ones, is to make a direct match with the person's musical tastes and expectations. I remember having a student who clearly had Latin American roots and the first example of guitar songs that I gave him was a salsa song by Hector Lavoe, immediately his eyes shone, because it was just what he wanted, to have a closeness with salsa in the guitar, since he never thought that the guitar could sound the way I showed him, that was enough to hook the person in music to this day and make it a fascinating experience, the first thing I always do is try to read the student and their musical tastes.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Personally, I believe that each instrument is an extensive world that can expand infinitely. From experience, if you understand music, get a good ear and rhythm, you could dabble in more than one instrument, obviously with the appropriate dedication. For me the guitar is without a doubt an instrument that can be mastered basically but complicatedly extensive due to the infinity of techniques, rhythms, ways of playing and dissociation. For example, mastering the finger picking technique could take several years.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Success is something so relative that it is only directly related to your personal achievements and passion for music.
Someone who has an immeasurable passion will not mind dedicating any number of hours to his/her instrument and will surely breathe a musical atmosphere constantly listening to music all the time, going to concerts so that the flame of that passion stays alive. until experience and dedication allow you to experience the music firsthand.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

It would definitely be a great experience to meet Gustavo Cerati, Alex Turner and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith very early so that they can remember me the next morning... and share a musical evening that would not be complete without first singing the songs that have inspired me and that I have played on the guitar forever. Now that I think about it, I would love to permeate their energy to make my music, play Cerati solos, have the style of Alex Turner and sing with a range as wide as that of Steven Tyler.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Who seeks finds... I learned that your dreams will find you if you remain faithful and work hard. An anecdote is that without planning anything, one day I saw that they were holding auditions for admission to a music school in a renowned hotel in the city. When I realized this, I entered the hotel and took a turn. I had nothing to lose, so when my turn came, a very kind guy lent me his guitar and I went in front of some judges and teachers from the school to perform a song, I remember I played I'd rather go blind from Etta James... In the end and they asked me some questions so it seemed I empathized with the judges and when they told me about a tuition fee that I couldn't pay I simply thought that the experience would ended there, but then I received an email where the school was going to put me on a trial to apply for a scholarship in the semester if I maintained a good average, otherwise I would have to pay for the course, it was a challenge that it was worthed to face and in the end that's how thanks to the EMMAT Berklee School I received my first musical theoretical training. So Let your dreams find you. It's the lesson I had after that.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I consider that a great quality that makes me a great teacher is knowing how to read my students and connect with them thanks to musical taste in a very empathetic way. Fortunately, I like and know a lot of music and that allows me to create a unique method for each student level, tastes and expectations. I mainly want my students to feel motivated and eventually find their own method to continue their musical path. Here they will always have a friend to play, investigate and above all explore a lot musically.
