About John
I've always had a passion for science and sharing knowledge.
My goal as a tutor is to inspire, guide and encourage students in chemistry and physics, enabling them to grow in confidence as they develop their knowledge and understanding.
I believe lessons should be enjoyable, engaging and promote independent thinking within and around the subject.
Tutoring since September 2023. Current students include KS3 Chemistry and GCSE Physics.
- BSc (Hons) Degree in Chemistry from the University of York
- Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Pharmaceutical Studies from the University of Brighton
Previously my career in the pharmaceutical industry spanning 30 years included working as an analytical chemist followed by wide-ranging experience in chemistry-focused Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs. Relevant skills utilised include:
- Scientific writing and document preparation skills
- Proficiency at effective communication in a variety of situations
- Ability to identify, analyse and solve problems
- Experience of mentoring junior members of staff

- GCSE tuition for AQA, Edexcel and OCR exam boards.
- Degree qualified: BSc (Hons) Chemistry.
- Excellent subject knowledge.
- Typical lessons of 1 hour.
- I provide tailored teaching, taking into account the needs of the individual student. This ensures we are able to identify and focus on areas that need further work.
- Use of regular testing, past exam paper questions and marking schemes to assess understanding and to develop exam techniques.
- I’ll always provide positive and constructive feedback.
- My approach is to develop understanding of concepts and
independent thinking, including using easy to understand
analogies and practical examples.
- Understanding of neurodiverse needs, including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD and auditory issues.
