About Robert
I am a Chinese language graduate from SOAS University of London with a strong academic background in both modern and classical Chinese, as well as over seven years of experience working in the translation industry. Having lived in China and used Mandarin in professional contexts, I bring both practical and academic insight into my teaching.
I have a genuine passion for languages, particularly their structure, history, and etymology. This interest naturally informs my teaching, allowing me to explain concepts clearly and give students a deeper understanding of how the language works.
Outside of my professional work, I enjoy painting, travelling, exercise, and practising calligraphy - an interest that also connects closely with Chinese language and culture.
I take a professional, reliable, and patient approach to tutoring, and I aim to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable building their skills step by step.

My Approach to Tutoring
My teaching focuses on building a strong foundation in Mandarin for beginners and elementary learners. I take a structured but flexible approach, combining clear explanations with practical use of the language from the very beginning.
I place particular emphasis on pronunciation and tones early on, as these are essential for long-term progress. Lessons typically include a mix of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with plenty of guided practice to help you feel confident using what you’ve learned. I also incorporate real-life examples and cultural context, so the language feels relevant and engaging rather than purely academic.
My methodology is patient and step-by-step, ensuring that students fully understand each concept before moving on. I adapt lessons to your pace and goals, whether you’re learning for travel, personal interest, or future study.
Lesson Structure & Length
Lessons are usually 60 minutes, which allows enough time to introduce new material, practise, and review previous content. Longer sessions can be arranged if preferred.
Qualifications & Experience
I hold a BA in Chinese (Modern and Classical) from SOAS University of London. I have lived in China and have used Mandarin in professional contexts, including 7 years working in the translation industry. This gives me both a strong academic background and insight into how the language is used in real-world situations.
Who My Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for beginners and elementary learners of all ages, including complete beginners. I work well with adult learners and motivated younger students who want a clear, supportive introduction to Mandarin.
