About Brian

I was a member of my provincial team for the National Olympiad in Informatics
in Provinces (NOIP) in China. I was selected through the provincial selection
contest to represent my province at the National Olympiad in Informatics
(NOI).

My competition level is comparable to USACO Platinum (USA) and AIO Gold
(Australia).

I have five years of experience teaching competitive programming. I coach
students for AIO (Australia), USACO (USA), BIO (UK) and CCC (Canada).

I coach. I don't lecture.

In a typical lesson the student writes every line of code. My job is to ask
the right question at the right moment, not to hand over the answer. When a
student is stuck, I give a hint rather than a solution. When they are close,
I stay quiet. This feels slower for the first month and much faster after
that, because the student learns to solve problems independently instead of
waiting to be told.

Four things I focus on:

Partial credit first. AIO and USACO both award points per subtask, so a
correct brute-force solution earns real marks. I teach students to secure
those points first and optimize afterwards. Many competitors lose marks by
chasing the full solution and submitting nothing at all.

Reading the problem properly. Most lost points come from misreading the
constraints. I train students to infer the intended complexity from the data
range before they write a single line.

Separating idea errors from implementation errors. "I didn't know the
algorithm" and "I knew it but fumbled the code" require completely different
fixes. We diagnose which one it was after every failure.

Contest conditions. Full-length timed papers under the real rules, including
the open-book format that AIO permits, where prepared templates and printed
notes are allowed at the desk.

Between lessons, students work through problem sets on Luogu. I track every
submission, so each lesson starts from what actually went wrong rather than
from the next chapter of a textbook.

LESSON LENGTH

Lessons are available in two formats, and students choose.

60 minutes, for a focused single-topic session.

120 minutes, with a 10-minute break in the middle, for competition
preparation. This format covers new material, guided problem-solving and
review in one sitting.

Most students start with 60 minutes and move to 120 as competition season
approaches.

The weekly lesson is the coaching. The real progress happens in daily
practice of 20 to 40 minutes, which I set and check every week. Students who
only attend the lesson and do not practice between them progress roughly
three times more slowly, so I treat the homework as part of the course rather
than an optional extra.

WHO MY LESSONS ARE FOR

Age: 11 to 18, which is Years 6 to 12.

Starting level: students should be comfortable with loops, conditionals and
arrays. No algorithm background is required.

Competition tracks: AIO (Australia), USACO (USA), BIO (UK) and CCC (Canada).

The lessons are also suitable for school computer science and for
senior-secondary CS subjects such as NSW Software Engineering and Enterprise
Computing.

Language: lessons are taught in Chinese with English technical terms. All
problem statements, materials and code are in English.

These lessons are not suitable for complete beginners who have never written
a program, or for students looking for assignment or homework completion,
which I do not offer.
