We had our educational journey together. I know that he had built himself from all the basics of Mathematics which is the most important for any teacher. Also he had discovered few of his own technique to learn and derived difficult maths formula. You should try learning with him.
He has a good command in mathematics and has solid understanding for the subject matter he is teaching he even has good communication skills as mathematics can be a challenging subject for many students,so it's important to have a someone who can explain complex concepts in a clear and consider manner
