About Hélen

My name is Hélen Granerud. I moved to London in autumn 2021 to study at Goldsmiths University of London. I have a degree from University of Oslo in Administration and Leadership, and am currently studying a Sociology and Anthropology BA. In my high school (age 16 to 19) I specialised in classical singing at Foss Upper Secondary School (which we in Norway would refer to as a high school).

I have struggled with subjects myself in the past. I had a terrible stage fright, which made it hard for me to perform both when it came to my singing and presentations at school. However, after much trial and error, I found a way that worked for me. When it came to singing I had to focus on the lyrics more than the melody, really emerge myself in the song. As for presentations, I needed to focus on writing a presentation that I understood, not just recited. By writing my own sentences and picking apart what I read I got a stronger understanding of my topic and could from there feel freer and more confident when presenting.

My way might not be your way. In many of the subjects I am teaching, my teaching will differ depending on the student. My language classes are the most structured once, but even here it is possible to make changes. I want us to co-operate and make a lesson where you learn as much as possible, and that makes you want to come back for another lesson. Please communicate any ideas you have that might improve your learning.

About the lesson

  • All Levels
  • English

All languages in which the lesson is available :

English

I will be able to hold lessons in the four aforementioned topics.

Norwegian is my native language and I do have some experience teaching it to fellow students at my university in Norway. As for my English, I have had English for 11 years in school as my second language, and my English has qualified me for studying at both Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in South Korea and for studying at Goldsmiths University of London, where I currently study.

My approach to teaching languages in one I have picked up from learning languages myself, which means about half of our time will be spent learning vocabulary and grammars, the other will be used to practice using what we have learned, both through games, writing and conversations.

The Norwegian classes will be available for anyone at any level. When it comes to English, I will be mostly doing correction work, such as reading through college/university applications, assignments or helping those who struggle with pronunciation and presenting. I can also teach in English in a similar format to my Norwegian classes, however I will not be able to take on beginners in English (level A0/A1), unless they also speak Norwegian.

The singing classes are offered for beginners or slight intermediate singers as of now. I have background in classical singing from my high school days. In Norway you can specialise in a subject during high school, thus I chose to specialise in music, specifically classical singing.

For the first class I will have to get to know your voice. We will do exercises to see your register, sing some simple songs to see how your breath, stability and pronunciation while singing is. The teaching method will be different depending on what you as a person want to achieve and how your voice is. Projection and pronunciation are things I myself have had to work on a lot, and is an often forgotten part of singing and getting the message of a song across, so this will have focus. In addition to working on range, both bettering the depth and height of your voice, practicing different placements and their techniques, such as belting, chest sound and head sound, and use these placements and techniques to create different sounds and reach tones you might not have thought you would be able to do.

Math is a topic I excelled at up to secondary school, and thus I will be able to teach math up to this level. Math is not the main focus of my teaching, however, I wanted to offer this in addition to my other lessons as I was not only good in math myself, but also spent a lot of time helping friends with math.

As for the length of each class, this is what I recommend:
* 1 hour to 2 hours for those learning a language
* 1 hour for those wanting help with papers, pronunciation and
presentations
* 1 hour for the singing lessons
* The math lessons depend on your questions and what you
need help with, but they will last no longer than 2 hours

Prices are:
* 15 pounds/hour for Norwegian lessons
* 15 pounds/hour for singing lessons
* 12 pounds/hour for English lessons (any sort)
* 10 pounds/hour for math lessons

Lessons can be held in person if you are located in London. Everyone can have online lessons.
