About Miriam
Trombonist and music educator Miriam Snyder is based in San Francisco, CA, where she teaches and freelances throughout the Bay Area. Before relocating to San Francisco to pursue and complete her master’s degree in trombone performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Miriam earned her bachelor’s degree and performer’s certificate in trombone performance from the Eastman School of Music. Her primary teachers include Dr. David Hamilton, Larry Zalkind, and Paul Welcomer.
Miriam can be found performing in many Bay Area ensembles including symphonies, opera and ballet orchestras, and chamber ensembles in Stockton, Santa Rosa, and San Jose, among others. As a passionate solo and chamber musician, Miriam has placed in several competitions, with recent successes including being a finalist in the 2023 SFCM Winds, Brass, Percussion, and Harp Concerto Competition, runner-up in the 2022 SFCM Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition, placing first in the 2021 American Trombone Workshop’s Quartet Competition, and placing third in the 2017 MTNA National Senior Brass Competition, after placing first in the state and southeastern rounds. Throughout spring 2024, Miriam performed in elementary schools across San Francisco as an ensemble member of the San Francisco Symphony’s Adventures In Music program.
Miriam teaches both private lessons and group classes in San Francisco, San Mateo, and San Jose. Her private students have placed in city and county ensembles, successfully auditioned for the Ruth Asawa High School for the Arts, and earned positions in summer music festivals. In addition to her private studio, Miriam coaches brass sections for trumpet, trombone, tuba, and euphonium students at Monroe Middle School, San Mateo High School, and leads the trombone and trumpet class for Music Mission San Francisco. Miriam’s past teaching engagements include serving as the instructor of the Golden State Youth Orchestra’s Endangered Instrument Program Trombone Instructor from 2024-2026 and serving the interim music teacher at Sunset Elementary in San Francisco for the 2023-24 school year, where she taught introductory music classes on ukulele, recorder, and general music. She previously coached brass students at Union Middle School, Cupertino Middle School, Evergreen Valley High School, and for Hillsborough County School District Elementary Schools.
