Effective teaching methods and techniques are vital for fostering an engaging and productive learning environment. Here are a few methods I incorporate;
- Active Learning: While reading to obtain specific course material is imperative I also believe in a hands on approach. Learning through hands-on activities tailored to the curriculum will foster deeper level of understanding in the student.
- Inquiry-Based Learning: I have found that having students read through material prior to formal instruction is very beneficial when accompanied with a directive for the student to compile a running list of questions. This is an efficient way to target areas that may need more in-depth instruction.
- Formative Assessments: I believe in testing for knowledge with assessments. I do not emphasize these assessments as a form of grading. These assessments allow for myself; as the instructor, to tailor lessons more individually and provides the opportunity for immediate feedback. This way the student knows what area of the material they can focus on in a more manageable size than having stress over a large portion of material.
