About Marie

My name is Marie, and I am a dedicated and passionate teacher with 23 years of teaching experience. I am a certified elementary and special education teacher with two South Carolina endorsements (Reading Teacher and Reading Coach). I was nominated twice as the Teacher of the Year at my previous district (Orangeburg County) prior to becoming the District Teacher of the Year for Orangeburg School District Three in 2016. When I transferred school district, my current school nominated me to be 2019 Teacher of the Year. I am a South Carolina teacher evaluator, which helps me develop further my teaching repertoire as I observe/learn from my colleagues.

Teaching is my passion. My dedication to teaching students how to read emanates from the mantra in education that “Every Teacher is a reading teacher.” Whether students are considered to be underachievers, non-readers, or having special learning needs, they still will be taught how to read one way or another. This guiding principle pushes me to strive further, to better contribute to the teaching profession which will ultimately makes a huge difference in the lives of the students.

Since becoming a professional educator, I have devoted myself to learning new trends and best practices for teaching literacy to non-readers. During my summers and spare time, I buy and read books targeted to this very purpose. Applying what I have learned to practice, I incorporate these skills and methods into my teaching practice to serve my students as best as I can. My goal is to help all students advance in their core competencies, and I am dedicated to continuing my own education in order to help them advance in their own.

My dream to uplift struggling students drew me to becoming a classroom teacher, but my desire to find new and innovative teaching solutions has led me down the path of authorship. I am currently working on a series of workbooks entitled “Reading the Right Way”, the first of which has been accepted by the publisher and will begin production shortly. My sincere hope is that “Reading the Right Way” will provide educators with an effective means to meet the needs of struggling readers.

Presently, I regard myself as a knowledgeable educator and a proficient teacher. For some that may be enough. For myself, however, I am committed to continuously improving my craft so that I may be a better teacher this year than last, so that I may reach more students this year than last, and so that I may improve my students’ abilities more this year than last. To this end, I research new instructional methods, work tirelessly on lesson plans, and push my students to excel. The “Reading the Right Way” series may be my greatest contribution to the field of education, but my greatest impact will be on the individuals who my earnest efforts have succeeded in teaching them to read.

My philosophy of education is a bit like my own personality; eclectic but unified. Students are unique individuals with varying strengths and potentials. Unique and special as each child is, all children possess the innate capacity to learn. Each child learns at his or her own rate with divergent modalities and learning styles. For this reason, I provide meaningful, relevant activities specific to the needs of the individual learner. While correctly differentiating instruction to the needs of the individual is an admittedly daunting task, I take inspiration from the results that it encourages among the learners.

My typical lesson plan includes (1) anticipatory set/warm-up activity/review; (2) modeling of the lesson expectation; (3) guided practice; (4) closure; and independent work. Alignment of the lesson objective, activities and materials, and assessment is very important for me. Alongside this, I put emphasis in providing specific and high-quality academic feedback, questioning techniques to help develop higher level thinking skills, and activities that promote problem solving and thinking skills.

My dedication to provide a meaningful learning experience with my students sets me apart from the other tutors. To an outside observer, my methods may appear unconventional or even eclectic. This is due to the rigorous standards I hold for myself and for my students. I refuse to allow my students to perform sub-par work, as I refuse to allow myself to deliver sub-par teaching. I view all of my students as capable leaners and provide them with the proper tools to thrive academically and mentally by encouraging an eagerness to learn which transcends beyond attaining basic reading, writing, and mathematical abilities to encompass the acquisition of skills which will allow them to become globally competitive citizens of the digital economy. To this end, I begin by requiring my students to exhibit mastery of the core subjects, and then go further by providing them with a curriculum filled with academic challenges which help them improve their creativity, as well as their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. In order to prepare my students for successful futures, I consciously provide students with exposure to media and technology skills which will enable them to compete in a future market where factual knowledge will be a baseline requirement for entry, and technological skills a pathway to success. The future job candidate must not only “know”, but also be able to “do”, and to readily acquire new knowledge and skills as the job market will be continuously diversifying. Furthermore, I hold a South Carolina teaching certificate in Elementary Education and Learning Disabilities. I also have two additional SC endorsements - Reading Teacher and Reading Coach.

I am capable to teach struggling readers or students with specific learning disabilities from age 5 to 12. I am also willing to help struggling students develop reading and math skills that will help them (1) decode and comprehend literary and informational texts and (2) solve simple (to two-step) word problems involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

I normally assess the student first to give me a baseline for progress monitoring. I do on-going assessments and track results either for remedial or enrichment lessons. I also modify instruction based on the progress the student is making as we perform the learning expectation.
