About Jonny

My name is Jonny, and I'm a writer, researcher, and translator based in Cambridge, UK. Having just completed my PhD, I'm now working on an English translation of the German novel 'Ein Haufen Dollarscheine' (2024) by Esther Dischereit. Alongside this, I'm continuing to write short stories (several of which have won awards) and research contemporary German literature for publication in academic journals.

I have always enjoyed teaching, especially when it means that I can share my passion for writing, and I hope I can inspire others to appreciate art as one of the most significant parts of the human condition as well.

My teaching methods are tailored to my students and their chosen subject. Lessons typically last between 50 and 60 minutes, and, most importantly, they are collaborative. This means that you won't simply be lectured by me, but you'll be expected to contribute actively to the class. Together, we'll work our way through a given text, whether that be a poem or a prose extract, a personal statement or an essay, and, in a mixture of close-and-distant readings, figure out how to improve upon the skills that you need for the particular assignment.

I have a PhD, MSt, and BA from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, where I have lectured undergraduate students of German literature. Before then, I tutored prospective applicants to Oxford about preparing for the entrance examinations and interviews, and I taught GCSE English poetry to Y10 students at a school in Oxford.

My lessons are for students aged 16 and over.
