About Ho

Full until 2026 Exam Season, please only send requests for Summer 2026 onwards.

Please note that I do not tutor students that attend the school I teach in, so please let me know which school you attend first.

I am an Edexcel Examiner, and a Lead Practitioner at a selective sixth form.

Feel free to check out:
Searching sohokmaths on google and it will be the first result

I have separate sessions for
1) Year 12 Maths
2) Year 12 Further Maths
3) Year 13 Maths
4) Year 13 Further Maths
5) University Entrance Exams

I mainly use it to answer any common questions that students send to me, and to show quick techniques when answering questions

In terms of maths tuition, lessons can be 1/1.5/2 hours per session, to your convenience.

I currently only do online-tuition, where we will do video-call lessons and screen sharing. With screen-sharing, we can write on the same screen at the same time. (Only if you have a stylus that can write on a tablet/computer, will assist you in setting this up if you have a device but don’t know how to use it)

After the lesson I will also send you pdf version of all the notes during the lesson.

What I also don't mind is WhatsApp/Email/Telegram pictures of questions/working outs and I can reply straight away what students did wrong/ provide answers of my own working out/alternative method

Also don't mind students giving me questions to mark and I can mark exactly like examiner instead of marking like a teacher.

Need:
Your year group (12/13)
Exam board
If you do further maths need your options
If you are in year 13, your AS grade
If you are in year 13, your offer requirements
Topics that may need help in
Calculator model (numworks/cg50 is highly preferred, if you can afford tuition why not get a more powerful calculator that is going to aid your exam technique and conceptual understanding.) (Casio Classwizz 991EX is the “minimum” suggested by exam boards, but lack graphing which a lot of times aid conceptual understanding, essential for further maths, helpful for A level maths, it also can find out probabilty distribution values form both left and right-tail, which the classwizz lacks this function as it can only works them out from left-tail)

calculator : if your school teacher already uses one, then there's no point changing to a different graphical calculator
But if you haven't got one, I highly recommend the numworks, it is cheaper and yet more powerful, much more user friendly, and has a completely free app if you want to try before you buy
The calculator is just an offline physical version, and it is fully JCQ compliant, highly recommended amongst teachers circle (although it has a lower market share in the UK)

PS: also willing to help on entrance exam eg MAT, TMUA, STEP, and Mock Interviews/Personal Statement Support for UCAS Applications.

Edexcel Examiner + part of Exam writing team, Maths and Further Maths teacher. A-Levels, IB, Pure, Statistics, Mechanics, All further Maths modules.

Find out more about Ho

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Mathematics was my favourite subject in school, and growing up I had two dream jobs, be paid watching football, and becoming a teacher.
Before becoming a school teacher in 2015, I was working on the trading desk for an international gambling/investment company, calculating football odds and hedging bets/balancing risks. (I was paid watching football while doing maths!)
I then started my own YouTube channel and my website sharing resources back in 2020, it gives me immense joy and satisfaction when clearing questions or misconceptions with my students.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I am an Edexcel Examiner, and a Lead Practitioner at a sixth form in Dagenham East. Before that I was Key Stage 5 coordinator, in charge of Mathematics and Further Mathematics at another highly selective sixth form in East Ham, East London
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

"Mathematics, you see, is not a spectator sport. To understand mathematics means to be able to do mathematics. And what does it mean [to be] doing mathematics? In the first place, it means to be able to solve mathematical problems." ― George Pólya, How to Solve It: A New Aspect of Mathematical Method
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe tuition needs to be personal - to cater for individual needs, and to be able to adapt to the needs of each student.
For an A-Level student, you can never run of resources, the point of tuition is to save the time to "researching for hours" yourself, and to have a person that can guide, and help you being able to solve the problems.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I grew up in Hong Kong and came to the UK when I was seventeen. It is very hard to be able to "think outside the box", but if you have experience in two different cultures, language. Being able to "think" in a different box is by default "thinking outside the box" to the eyes of many.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Constant changes in the curriculum means one can never stop adapting!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I try to be a good person, be a role model for my students and my children. Teaching is not easy, it is like burning a candle, lightening others with your youth.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Patience, and being able to cater to individual needs.
For online tuition, I insist on both teacher and student sharing their screen at the same time, and being able to annotate on it.
What I insist for all lessons: send student a zoom link on my Mac If student can join that on their Mac
Then they also send me a different calling link, say Google meet etc on their iPad This allow student to see my screen, and me to see student's screen
(That is the whole point of tuition, for me to "correct" or "improve" student's method/working out, else there is no difference to a tuition lesson than watching someone do maths on YouTube!)
(I prefer this than say student annotating on my screen, since if student makes notes on their own note taking apps eg Goodnotes/notability/Noteful etc, they immediately save into their device, and I can see their working out "real time" as well)
