About Jacob

Hi! I’m currently studying Education at the University of Brighton, having previously studied History, War and Conflict. I’ve always wanted to work with children and young people, and my passion for teaching started when I was just 16, when I completed my work experience in a school. Since then, I’ve had a range of experiences working with children, from tutoring family and friends to completing an extended placement where I helped develop a website designed to make studying more intuitive and engaging because who likes studying?

I want to tutor because I genuinely love teaching people new things. I was lucky enough to have a couple of teachers who made such a positive impression on me that I wanted to become the kind of teacher or tutor that students walk away from thinking, “I actually enjoyed that!” I also discovered that one of the best ways I learn is by teaching someone else what I’m trying to understand — slightly weird, I know, but it works! This is something I try to bring into my tutoring by encouraging students to explain, discuss and apply what they have learned rather than simply memorising information.

A huge part of my experience with young people came from Camp America, which was an experience that genuinely changed me. I had the privilege of looking after a wonderfully rambunctious group of 12-year-olds, and while the days could be long — including the occasional late-night wake-up because someone couldn’t sleep — I loved every minute of it. I was there when children needed a plus 1 to fend off the homesickness and needed someone to talk to, but I was also there to tell ridiculous stories, introduce new card games, teach new skills and make sure they had the best summer possible. I met some incredibly inspirational people, made friends for life and came away knowing that working with young people is something I want to continue doing.

Outside of education, I’m a pretty goofy and laid-back person. I take things seriously when I need to, but I think there is always room for a laugh. I love indoor bouldering, I’m captain of a dodgeball team, I practised karate for 14 years and I’m a big reader. I’ve also played video games for as long as I can remember, and music is a huge passion of mine. I love History, Geography and English, and as I’ve got older I’ve also developed a real interest in Philosophy and Psychology.

I think what makes me different as a tutor is that I’m down to earth and honest. I won’t beat around the bush, and I won’t pretend something is good enough if I know you can do better. I have high expectations and I will challenge and push my students, but I want that challenge to come with encouragement, humour and a relationship where you feel comfortable being yourself. I’ll probably be laughing for 90% of the lesson — partly because I want my students to enjoy learning, and partly because I want to enjoy my job too!

Ultimately, I want my students to leave each lesson feeling like they’ve learned something, made progress and but most importantly had a bit of fun along the way. And for any older students reading this who might feel like everything is piling up around them: it’s going to be okay. Sometimes education can feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, but everything passes, and things do get easier. You'll smash it boss.

My lessons are designed to be engaging, informative and, most importantly, enjoyable. There is too much evidence to ignore the fact that kids learn the best when they are having fun! I believe students learn best when they understand not only what they are learning, but why it is relevant and how they can apply it in real situations. It is so easy to teach something as an adult but not understand its relevancy but then expect your student to. I will always research and plan my lessons extensively to be able to deliver not just a successful lesson, but a well informed one.

I aim to make lessons practical and interactive while keeping them relaxed and fun. I’m a very down-to-earth and approachable person, and I think my personality helps me build positive relationships with students where they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and being honest about what they find difficult. I can be a bit silly and stupid sometimes, and although I understand as a teacher I am expected to be professional, before that I am a role model. Being funny and expressing the most unhinged and raw version of yourself is the biggest lesson I am trying to teach kids in a world plagued by social media and unrealistic expectations.

Typically, I plan my sessions around an hour. We’ll start with around five minutes to say hello and have a quick catch-up, before spending approximately 25 minutes going through the topic and developing our understanding. We’ll then spend another 25 minutes putting that knowledge into practice through questions, discussions, flashcards or other activities suited to the student. The final five minutes will be used to reflect on the session and set out anything I’d like the student to work on before we meet again. I’m happy to adapt this structure depending on the student’s needs, ability and preferred way of learning.

I also bring a wide range of experience working with children and young people. I have provided 1-to-1 tutoring to family and friends, who have strongly encouraged me to pursue tutoring further, of which here I am. During my time at Camp America, I worked closely with children aged 8–16, including providing individual support with English, such as helping children write letters home, a very personal thing to them which I was overjoyed they felt comfortable to approach me for help with, all the way to teaching practical skills such as fire building while maintaining a strong focus on safety but not extinguishing that curious flame inside kids.

Alongside this, I have experience in sports coaching, including dodgeball, and have previously worked as a karate teacher. These experiences have helped me develop the patience, communication skills and adaptability needed to work with a wide range of young people.

Just know that your child may walk away from my lesson with 3 new dad jokes and a random fact or two about the Tudor Dynasty.
