About Mary
I graduated magna cum laude from Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, with a Bachelor of Science in English Education and a minor in theater. I have a Master of Arts degree in literature from the University of South Dakota. I have experience teaching literature and composition to high school sophomores and college freshmen. As a graduate teaching assistant, I also tutored college students in the Writing Center. I've made a living as a professional writer for five years. Before that, I worked for eight years as a medical transcriptionist/speech recognition editor.

I view literature as a door to the world that anyone can open if they have the key. My goal as a tutor is to give you the key that unlocks the door by providing context about the author's background and by helping you relate the literature to your own life. As a student, I found that few English teachers know how to teach drama effectively. As a teaching assistant, I noticed that several of my colleagues, given the option, refused to teach drama at all because they were too intimidated by it. Because I have studied drama literature from the theater perspective as part of my undergraduate minor and have experience acting on stage, I know how to teach it effectively. My philosophy of teaching writing is to be descriptive rather than prescriptive. In other words, instead of telling you what to do in your own writing, I try to point out what is effective and what may be less effective and present you with options for improving your writing.
