About Joanne
Since graduating with a 2:1 degree in English Literature some years ago, I have always taught English in some format. I started my career as a teacher of English as a foreign language and taught in a variety of language schools in both the UK and Italy. I then became interested in private tutoring and I have supported Scottish students for the last 15 years in my home town of Linlithgow. I have helped students achieve their goals in Standard Grades, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications. I have also worked for small tutoring organisations in this time so am also adept at working with small groups of students as well as 1:1. I have worked from home and also in students' houses but I now mainly work online and have developed a variety of worksheets I share on an online platform. I find that students respond well to this method of tutoring and this has opened up more possibilities for me and for students as I can support students who live in other parts of Scotland. I create a warm, friendly and non-judgemental environment where students can thrive.

I gained a 2:1 degree in English literature some years ago. Since then I have worked as an English tutor for over 15 years and have helped many young people achieve their goal of gaining an excellent pass in both National 5 or Higher English. I start by finding out from the student what skills they need help with. I then design a programme of lessons designed to help support students with the skills and confidence they need to gain National 5 or Higher English. Lessons generally last an hour. I use a bank of online resources to help build both competence and confidence in areas of reading for understanding, analysis and evaluation (RUAE), critical reading and critical writing skills. My approach is to be curious, friendly, reassuring and empathetic towards pupils. It is important to me that I can provide a safe area for students to improve their skills. We work together on the student becoming confident and competent in exam technique.
