I started my career teaching privately and formed one of the first music schools online. Later, I served as faculty in a university and left with the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Theory.
When I teach, I don't just give you information you can find easily online. My students regularly tell me that they get information that is impossible to find. I teach the mechanics of music and how you can understand music in a more intuitive and free while while also stressing the importance of a good foundation in theory and practice.
Students learn to create their own rules for their compositions since I show them how to develop their ideas. Style doesn't matter, since the process of composing is what I teach. I have classical, jazz, pop, and hybrid musicians.
Some of my students have gone on to write for video games, film, and concert music.
---------------
COMPOSITION LESSONS
Due to my experience teaching, my idea of a lesson plan is to have a goal set for each lesson. I then go about working with the student individually to find out the best way to get them to the goal. I work with students to help them see the patterns and logic in their own compositions, and then we discuss techniques and options to improve the work.
MUSIC THEORY, AUDIATION, COUNTERPOINT, FORM
If you're taking music theory lessons, audiation, counterpoint, or form, you need a teacher who is at least three levels above your current ability. I have a solid understanding of these subjects, and I know why learning scales, analyzing progressions, and writing counterpoint will help you as a musician.
I understand the links between all of these subjects, and I can explain to students the "why" and not just the "how." At my last university, I taught all levels of music theory from the bachelor to doctoral level.
---------------
My lessons are for serious students who want an instructor who will think about them when the lesson is over and constantly search for the best ways to help my students improve. When I take you on as a student, I dedicate myself to you fully.
