About Dr Thomas

I am Head of a University Psychology Department and a published researcher with over 15 years of experience teaching and supervising psychology students at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. My academic career has focused on research methods, statistics, and psychometrics, and I have supported hundreds of students through their dissertations, theses, and research projects—from topic development and design to data analysis and final write-up. My research expertise includes quantitative and qualitative methods, and I am particularly known for my contributions to measurement reliability and statistical best practice. I am co-author of the widely cited paper “From alpha to omega: a practical solution to the pervasive problem of internal consistency estimation” (British Journal of Psychology, 2014), which has been referenced in thousands of academic publications worldwide and is used internationally in teaching research methods. Across my career, I have published in leading psychology journals, served as a reviewer for international journals, and acted as an examiner and external adviser for dissertation and doctoral projects in the UK and abroad. My work has attracted over 5,000 citations on Google Scholar, reflecting its reach and impact within the discipline. I am passionate about helping students gain confidence in research and academic writing, turning what can feel like complex or intimidating tasks into achievable and well-structured projects. My approach is supportive, structured, and tailored to each student’s goals, ensuring that you not only complete your work successfully but also understand and take ownership of the process. I combine academic rigour with an encouraging, student-centred approach. Sessions are focused, practical, and responsive to your immediate needs—whether that’s planning your dissertation structure, interpreting your data, or refining your writing to achieve clarity and impact. Students often comment that they leave sessions feeling more confident, organised, and empowered in their academic work.
