  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in mathematics and tutoring began immediately after I graduated from high school. At first, I simply enjoyed helping my younger schoolmates with their math homework, but I soon realized that teaching came naturally to me. I loved the feeling of explaining something clearly and watching a student’s eyes light up in understanding.

For about four years after high school, I returned to my former school to mentor and tutor students in mathematics, physics, and further mathematics. During that time, I saw how easily students could fall behind without the right guidance, and how quickly they could improve with a little patience, encouragement, and clarity.

When I entered university to study mathematics in 2008, the desire to teach full-time only grew stronger. I had inspiring lecturers who deepened my interest and helped me see mathematics as a language: a tool for solving real problems. By then, I knew teaching was more than an interest; it was part of who I am.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach mathematics, and I enjoy almost every aspect of it; from algebra and calculus to trigonometry and problem-solving. I particularly love topics that challenge students to think logically and see patterns. Mathematics is a subject that trains the mind to be structured, analytical, and confident, and I enjoy guiding students toward that mindset.

I like discussing topics that help students overcome fear and build confidence, especially areas they once considered “too hard.” It brings me joy to break down complex ideas into simple steps until the student sees that math is not as intimidating as it appears.

There are no topics I dislike, but some require more patience and practice. However, I see that as an opportunity to help students grow stronger, both academically and mentally.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, absolutely. I have been blessed with teachers who shaped my academic journey and inspired my passion for teaching.

In junior high school, my math teacher, Mrs. Lasisi, made a huge impact on me. She encouraged me constantly and pushed me to keep improving. Her belief in me played an important role in my confidence as a young learner.

In senior high school, Mrs. Folake Pedro, my chemistry teacher, was not only inspirational but also supportive on a personal level. She helped me financially during difficult times, and her kindness is something I will never forget.

I also had numerous lesson teachers: Mr. Sowola Joshua, Mr. Agbesuyi Israel, Mr. Ernest Ugochukwu, Mr. Taoreed, Mr. Ayo, Mr. Olokodana Ibrahim, Mr. Olanrewaju, Mr. Christopher, Mr. Amos, and others, who treated me as more than just a student. Their confidence in my abilities encouraged me to push myself further.

At university, professors like Prof. A. A. Mogbademu, Prof. J. O. Olaleru, Prof. A. Solarin, and Prof. M. O. Ajetunmobi deepened my understanding of mathematics and shaped the way I teach today. Their passion, discipline, and dedication constantly inspire me to give my best as a tutor.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs to be more than knowledgeable; they need to be patient, understanding, and committed to the student’s growth. The qualities that matter most include:

    · Clear communication: The ability to explain complex ideas in simple terms.

    · Patience: Every student learns differently.

    · Empathy: Understanding the student’s struggles without judgment.

    · Flexibility: Adapting teaching methods to suit the learner.

    · Consistency: Keeping the student motivated and progressing.

    · Encouragement: Instilling confidence and showing the student they can do it.

    · Strong subject mastery: So the student can trust your guidance.

A great tutor inspires learning, not just teaches lessons.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of the most memorable chapters of my academic life revolves around math competitions. In high school, I loved participating in mathematics contests. Within my school, I usually emerged as the first-place winner. But outside school, the competition was tougher. I didn’t always achieve the first position I desired, and at first, it was discouraging but it also taught me valuable lessons.

Instead of giving up, I decided to learn from every mistake I made. I used each competition as an opportunity to grow. Eventually, I began preparing junior students for the same competitions. I shared my mistakes with them, guided them on areas to focus on, and encouraged them never to fear challenges.

There was one particular competition I participated in three consecutive times.

    · The first year, I came 4th.

    · The second year, I came 2nd.

    · The third year became unforgettable. I finally won 1st place.

What made that moment even more meaningful was that some of the junior students I had been mentoring also won prizes in their own categories. It felt like a shared victory: proof that resilience, consistency, and courage really do pay off.

That experience taught me something I now pass on to my students:
Nothing is impossible. What limits us often exists only in the mind. If you persist, you can achieve anything you imagine.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Mathematics is a beautiful subject, but like many learners, I had moments of struggle too. Some topics didn’t make sense immediately, and I had to spend extra time practicing and asking questions. But instead of seeing difficulties as obstacles, I saw them as challenges to overcome; and that mindset helped me grow.

Another challenge was learning how to communicate mathematical ideas in a simple, relatable way. Over time, through teaching many students with different learning styles, I developed the ability to explain concepts clearly and patiently. Now, that once-challenging skill has become one of my strengths as a tutor.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My strongest passion is teaching; not just mathematics, but teaching as a whole. I love helping people understand things that once confused them. I enjoy breaking down complex ideas, guiding learners; step by step, and watching them grow academically and personally.

Mathematics is my primary subject, but teaching itself is what energizes me. Seeing a student go from doubt to confidence is one of the most rewarding experiences I know. It gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

What makes me a Superprof is my genuine dedication to my students’ success. I bring patience, passion, and many years of experience to every lesson. I don’t just teach formulas, I teach understanding, confidence, and a mindset that prepares students for success in school and beyond.

I personalize my lessons, celebrate small improvements, and create a learning environment where students feel supported and motivated. My goal is to make every student believe in their own ability to succeed, no matter where they are starting from.

Above all, I truly care. And that makes a big difference.
