About Rebecca
I am a licensed practicing attorney, experienced competitive speech coach, and lifelong believer in the value of strong communication skills. I hold a B.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Minnesota, with minors in Chemistry and Sport Management, and a J.D. from Penn State Dickinson Law.
For the past seven years, I have coached competitive speech students in grades 7–12 and currently serve as a head coach. During that time, I have worked with students across a wide range of events and ability levels, helping them develop stronger writing, research, argumentation, public speaking, and performance skills.
My professional work as an attorney has also given me extensive experience researching complex subjects, developing persuasive arguments, editing written work, and communicating complicated ideas clearly and precisely. Combined with my coaching background, this allows me to approach writing and speaking from both an analytical and an audience-focused perspective.
Most importantly, I genuinely enjoy helping people become better communicators. I am direct and detailed with my feedback, but my goal is never to turn your work into something that sounds like me. I want to help you develop your own ideas, strengthen your individual voice, and become more confident in your ability to communicate effectively on your own.

My approach is highly individualized because there is no single formula for becoming a stronger writer or speaker. I start by figuring out what you already do well, where you are struggling, and what you want to accomplish. From there, I use a largely Socratic approach—asking questions, offering targeted feedback, and helping you develop your own ideas and solutions rather than simply telling you what to say or write.
A typical lesson depends on your goals. We might work through a piece of writing together to improve its organization, argument, clarity, or flow; develop and structure a speech or presentation; practice delivery and receive detailed feedback; brainstorm ideas; strengthen persuasive arguments; or prepare for an upcoming speech, competition, presentation, or assignment. I want you to leave each session understanding not only what to improve, but why the change works and how to apply that skill independently in the future.
What sets me apart is the combination of my professional and coaching experience. I am a licensed practicing attorney with a B.A. in Communication Studies and a J.D., as well as a head competitive speech coach with seven years of experience working with students in grades 7–12. My professional background requires clear, precise, persuasive writing and communication, while coaching has given me extensive experience teaching those skills to individual students with very different strengths, personalities, and learning styles.
My lessons are appropriate for middle school, high school, college, and adult learners. I can help with academic and persuasive writing, speeches and presentations, public speaking, argument development, speech competition, delivery and performance, or simply becoming a more confident and effective communicator. Whether you are starting from scratch or already have strong skills and want detailed feedback to take them further, I will meet you at your current level and build from there.
