About David
I spent 8 years teaching Gifted and Talented students in the Los Angeles School District, and the past 20 years as a professor in the Journalism Dept of California State University. I have a BA in Journalism, an MA in Art Education, and an MFA degree in Visual Communication. I specialize, in my own work, in photography, both as a documentary photographer and as an artist, and I am involved in a lot of work with "marginalized communities," including the homeless population in Los Angeles, and with schools and community organizations in Nairobi, Kenya, where I spent the early part of my career working for non-profit agencies. I've also traveled and worked extensively in China, as a lecturer and a photographer.

My specialty as an educator is finding the most relevant, fun and interesting way to engage students in the learning process. This includes designing my own lesson plans, customized to meet the needs of students, regardless of age or education level. I provide hands-on lessons and activities, and with more than 25 years of classroom experience, can give students the feedback and follow-up teaching needed to make sure they succeed. Photography lessons are available in sets of 5 lessons, which will be covered in a 5-hour span that will be custom-designed depending on the student's needs and skill level.
The topics included in the Five Lesson Plan can be chosen from any of these:
Camera operations: Shutter speed, ISO, aperture, etc
Elements of good photography: Composition, Timing, Lighting
The Art of Portraiture: How to bring out the best in people in front of your lens
Street Photography: Capturing the essence of everyday life (without bothering strangers!)
Photojournalism: Visual storytelling
Landscape Photography: Highlighting nature's beauty and scale
Photo Editing: How to enhance and perfect the final image from the original exposure
However, this is very flexible and I can customize and adapt the curriculum to meet the specific needs of a student.
