About Coach
I can help you:
Strengthen fundamentals;
Improve your mental game;
Play from the ground up;
Produce line drives!
I've worked with players of nearly all ages and experience levels, in a team setting as well as one on one. I've had players go on to play pro and college ball, but I also work with rec leaguers looking to fine-tune and rookies just trying out the game.
I'm low-tech, but high-impact. I'm attentive to every aspect of the player--mental, physical, intellectual, and social/emotional--as needed. I focus on mechanics and approach, but I also emphasize injury prevention, repeatability, and understanding more than many other coaches; I think it's easier to repeat a motion, and find your comfort zone mechanically, when you have a truer understanding of what you're doing. Skill and talent are indispensable, but between the ears is where many of the game's successes begin.
Mechanically, I teach a line drive-oriented approach and focus on balance and playing from the ground up. My coaching motto is that line drives win games!
I also believe that enjoying the game, and remembering to have fun and appreciate the game even when you're working hard to improve, are essential. Every day you get to play is a gift.
(Note: this website has changed its new settings for the worse on our end, so to clarify my distance/travel range: I'm open to traveling to pretty much any location in Manhattan and perhaps a mile or two away e.g. nearby parts of BK, Queens, or the Bronx! As for your location, it can be anywhere from which you can comfortably reach the city for a lesson. Thanks!--Coach West)

I begin with a basic q/a to asses their level of baseball experience, then some basic projectile skills to test their baseline ability. From there, I proceed based on their mechanics and form, along with their conceptual grasp of the rules and other aspects of the game.
Primarily middle school, roughly ages 9-15; I've also worked successfully with elementary-aged players, high school/college players, and seniors.
Listen, but feel free to ask questions. Stay relaxed, and have fun!
Chaperoning three of my MSBL players to an All-Star game at Macombs Dam, in the shadow of Yankee Stadium. I coached first & third, and mentored my players through their nerves. They had a blast!
Another moment was when last season's winner of our Most Improved Player Award--who didn't even make the active roster the previous year--drove a ball about 250 feet into the gap in front of our home crowd at Crotona Park. It was his first real drive against in-game pitching, and he motored his way to a two-run triple...had he not stutter-stepped around first, he'd have made it all the way around the bases! (2020 postscript: this year, he's a line drive machine and our team captain. I couldn't be more proud of him as a player and human.)
2021 postscript: a player with whom I've worked for about a year, who started literally from scratch as an older adult, has come an incredibly long way in terms of confidence, bat control, and glove skills. He's joining a league this year!
2022 postscript: a player I began working with as a 10yo with no organized baseball experience and weak mechanics...can now self-hit a clean line drive from home plate to mid-outfield and is angling to make his MSBL team.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What they most enjoy about the game, what they think is their best baseball/softball skill, and where they'd most like to improve.

Perfect! He couldn't have been nicer, more accommodating, or more professional.
Perfect! This is an update about my experiences with Coach West. I am an older 74 y.o. student of his. I started without any skills form childhood. We started with basic throwing and catching. Coach West brought me along, always being careful , watching out constantly to gently correct my early errors, praising my improvementand gradually giving me the correct tips to improve my skIlls. Never a cross word or sigh, always positive and helpful. He keeps up with my having any strains to minimize and correct my errors in throwing, catching. Three months ago, we started batting practice. Hitting the ball, as my friends tell me, is the BEST! My only complaint is that he doesn't charge enough for what he is worth compared to other instructors.
Perfect! My three boys are taking baseball lessons with Coach West, and they can’t wait to have their lessons every week and it is their favorite sport now. Coach West is a very professional, attentive and also friendly and he knows how to teach kids of all ages. He is the coach everyone must love!
Perfect! He is such an excellent coach! My boys always look forward to having their lessons!
Perfect! Coach West Has A Great Personality & Very Knowledgeably About The Sport. 👍
Perfect! Coach West is terrific. I am a novice, and he is very supportive. In 5 weekly sessions, my catching and throwing a baseball. Went from no experience to fair catching and throwing. I am confident of more program.
And he is a very knowledgeable guy, on a variety of subjects , which enhances our interactions. As an older guy, not a kid, I appreciate this.Perfect! Where do I begin! My son is 12 years old and in the process of transitioning into an older division. I was looking for someone that would not only work on his mechanics but also help him with the mental part of the game. Coach West has gone above and beyond my expectations! My son has gained so much knowledge since training with Coach West!! He has also improved on his mechanics!! We truly look forward to continue training with him during the off season and next spring!!!

He is an amazing coach. He truly cares and is really talented. My son loved him and so do all of his friends
My son loves working with Coach West. Coach West is very knowledgeable about baseball, patient and kind. My son looks forward to his baseball lesson every week, has learned so much and improved both his swing and pitching. His confidence in his capabilities has also soared. As a parent, I appreciate that he provides video analysis of my son’s pitching and batting so I can see the improvement as well.
Paul West is an excellent coach. His emphasis on fundamentals have been instrumental in our son’s development as a baseball player over the last year.
Coach West sports tremendous understanding of the game and its mechanics — from pitching form to at-bat strategy. He is keen to slow down and explain the different aspects of practice, helping his students understand not just what to do, but why they’re doing it.
As a parent, this approach has helped me significantly, as it gives me clear insights as well that I can take into at-home practice with my son.
Coach West is extremely attentive to his students, and their personal development as baseball players. At the beginning of our time working with Coach West, he prepared a field report, identifying our son’s strengths and weaknesses as a baseball player, as well as the positions where our son may excel.
From this, Coach West constructed a development plan that matched our son’s goals. This plan was also conscious of the demands of our son’s existing baseball season, so as not to overwork his arm.
Through the year, Coach West was very communicative, checking in after every practice to identify points of improvements, and areas of regression. His attention to detail is incredible, and his investment in his students is a rare find.
And perhaps most importantly, Coach West is excellent with kids. He brings a great attitude and outlook to every session, modeling for his students what it looks like to be a good sport and a team player.
Moreover, working with Coach West has helped our son learn to pace himself. More now than ever, he works toward getting a little bit better in the name of steady progress, rather than overworking himself to frustration.
We simply cannot recommend Coach West enough.Our son got significantly better and enjoys the technicalities of baseball! Coach West is excellent at explaining baseball mechanics to kids and keeping them trying harder!
Coach West is an excellent teacher. He really engaged my son in both playing and learning about baseball. He not only teaches the fundamentals but also teaches about the mentality of the game. We couldn’t be happier and my son loves his lessons.
Coach West is one of the best coaches that I have ever meet. There is no doubt that he has expertise in baseball to help players improve their skills. Coach West helped me improve my throwing and hitting mechanism and I was able to generate more explosive power instantly. Moreover, Coach West not only focus on players’ physical aspects, but also take care of their mental health. He explained to me a lot about how to clear my mind on field and it meant a lot to me. Overall, I highly recommend Coach West to everyone who wants to improve their performance. I am genuinely happy and grateful to meet him.
Coach West is knowledgeable and encouraging and his bubbly personality makes working with him a joy. I already see an improvement in just a handful of lessons. Not only does Coach West work with simple baseball lovers, such as myself, but the videos of his young, potential MLBers are quite stunning!
