Anja is by far the best cello teacher I have ever had! While she is always firm about technique and fundamentals, I feel like she respects me as a musician and I can talk to her about the kind of music I love and what I want to play. Since I started studying with her, I've been practicing a lot more at home and remembering why I love cello in the first place. Anja Wood is not only one of the premiere cellists and performers in the New York City freelance and Broadway community, but she is a passionate teacher, mentor, and entrepreneur. When I was first coming up in the NYC scene about 15 years ago, Anja took me under her wing. This is most unusual in what is considered the greatest classical music scene in the world, but also the most cutthroat . But Anja welcomed me into the community. She spent time to mentor me and helped me learn how to show up prepared to be the best cellist and colleague I could be at the performance or session. I had the pleasure of learning the Broadway subbing ropes from the best, and she entrusted me as a long time sub on many of her shows including Hamilton: An American Musical!. Although I wasn’t formally her ‘student’, I learned how to pay attention to every detail - articulations, dynamics, ensemble - and how to execute them consistently, and under pressure. I also learned how to listen and work with feedback from music directors, conductors, and other musicians. This kind of preparation is invaluable. Anja is a fantastic teacher, cellist, and person. Her work founding and running the non-profit organization, Lelt Foundation, has inspired my own philanthropic side. I can guarantee that your work with Anja will be an inspiring, challenging AND fun time as you work towards your own artistic and musical goals!

She has been very patient and encouraging with my 15-year-old son, and his playing has improved markedly in the last two years. He also enjoys her connection to the hit show, and it seems to have inspired him to more effort. He looks forward to the lessons, even on Zoom.

Anja has been teaching my daughter, Kim how to play the cello for quite some time now. She is an expert in nuance, tone and musicality. Being that she is a Grammy award winning veteran and has played on so many Broadway shows- she is also a natural born performer who really knows how to help Kim shine when performing onstage. Kim was always an introvert when playing but with Anja’s guidance she is coming out of her shell and she now plays cello with such confidence. We are so lucky to have her be so generous as to share her teaching skills with us!
