About Riley
My service as a tutor stands out because I focus solely on general chemistry. I spent 2 years tuturoing only general chemistry for about 20 hours every week at Riverside City College, so I have learned the best ways to communicate general chemistry concepts so that anyone can understand them. Because I focused so much effort on mastering general chemistry and the communication of its concepts, I was lucky enough to be recognized as the tutor of the year for the 2018-2019 school year at Riverside City College.
I greatly enjoy being able to make a difference in students' lives. It is one of the greatest feelings to know that students you have been tutoring ended up being able to reach whatever goal they set for themselves, whether it be getting a higher letter grade than before on the most recent exam, getting an A or a B in their class, etc. Seeing those who I work with succeed academically is my main reason for tutoring. I chose to use general chemistry as the subject by which I tutor for the simple reason that I very much enjoy the subject myself.
I got started teaching simply by helping out some classmates in my general chemistry I class during group study sessions. I realized I enjoyed it so much that I decided to become a chemistry tutor at Riverside City College. Since then, I have continued to tutor, focusing soleley on general chemistry.
The official "certificate" I have obtained already that relates to my work is an associate's degree with great distinction in Math and Science from Riverside City College. The certificate I am working toward currently is a bachelor's degree in chemistry from University of California, Irvine (UCI); I currently am a senior at UCI.

My typical process for working with a new student involves figuring out a little bit about who they are, specifically asking them questions about what their major is (or if not in college yet, what they plan to major in), what their goals in the class are, how they've been doing in chemistry so far, etc. Asking these questions helps me to understand how I can cater my tutoring to them in a way that would be most beneficial because I am able to focus strongly on areas they might be weaker in as well as play to their strengths .
I have worked with a variety of students. Because I tutored for 2 years at a community college which has arguably a much greater concentration of "non-traditional" students than four-year universities, I have been able to tutor many of said "non-traditional students" (students that did not go straight out of high school to college). Thus, I feel I have become well-versed in communicating chemistry to people who have vastly different life experiences than myself. That being said, I have also tutored several traditional students as well (those who go straight to college out of high school). Because I have experienced success with such a variety of students, I am open to and confident about tutoring any kind of student that wants it!
The advice I would give to a student looking to hire a chemistry tutor or teacher would be to make sure that tutor or teacher still "knows their stuff." Chemistry is packed with so much content, it can be difficult for a tutor or teacher to know the material inside and out.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Questions I believe students should think through before talking to teachers about their academic needs needs include: 1) "What is it specifically about this material that I don't understand?" (Even if a student says they do not even know what to ask because they are so lost, that gives their teacher/tutor an idea of where to start!). 2) "What is it that I want to get out of this session?" 3) "How much time am I willing to set aside to mastering the material?"
