About Hana
My goal is for students to:
(1) Deeply understand concepts so that they have a solid foundation in math/science/writing etc. upon which to build further understanding. I have students talk me through their thought process as I am solving a problem so that I am confident they are arriving at the right answer for the right reason, and not because they have eliminated other multiple-choice answers or even because they were lucky enough to guess correctly. When students do not understand fundamental concepts, they will struggle as their education progresses, which is very frustrating and overwhelming.
(2) Learn how the concepts they are learning in class apply to their own life and topics of interest to them so that class material will be more engaging and enjoyable.
I enjoy the feeling of shared accomplishment when a student experiences an "aha" moment and finally intuitively grasps a concept that they have been struggling with for a long time. When I am able to build a student's confidence, proficiency and enjoyment of a subject they used to dread, I know that I have done well. I have personally had the experience of hating a subject (chemistry) and then being absolutely inspired by a passionate teacher's love for the subject, so much so that I decided to minor in chemistry during my last year of college. I want students to know that with mentorship, support, and practice, they can achieve their goals of going to the professional or graduate school they have dreamed about their entire life. As a nurse who works as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, I also have a firm understanding of how various health professionals work together to optimize patient care, and enjoy helping students and adult learners to explore their own career interests in healthcare by uniting their own interests and skills with the "big picture" of how all the different pieces fit together.
