About Fred Astaire
Whether you've danced before, or think you have two left feet, you've come to the right place. Fred Astaire Dance Studio is the premier dance studio.
When you sign up for lessons at the Fred Astaire Ballroom, you'll get to choose from multiple dance styles and approaches. And our welcoming studio environment makes our studio the perfect place to hone your skills, no matter at what level you are currently.
Our instructors have been learning and teaching dance anywhere from 10-40 years. Every one of our teachers goes through a series of rigorous sexaminations examinations that take 5-7 years to fully complete.
Our dance instructors are highly skilled and trained to help you learn using the unique Fred Astaire Method. Hailing from around the world, our teachers are actively competing, award-winning professionals and gifted educators. Many of our teachers have degrees in the fine arts and all have passed rigorous exams given by the Imperial Society of the Teachers of Dance and/or the Fred Astaire Curriculum certification.

At Fred Astaire Dedham Square we teach 3 types of lessons. Private, which is one on one instruction. Group, where 8-12 students work with 1 instructor learning the mechanics of a dance. Parties, where 30-40 people come to socialize and dance every Friday night. Each piece of our 3 lesson system for learning work together to help you learn faster and more efficiently than any other method available. Our friendly and encouraging staff will have you feeling comfortable and ready to dance in no time.
Private Lessons: Are scheduled anytime between the hours of 1:30pm and 10:00pm Monday through Friday and 10:30am to 5:15 pm on Saturday. Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Dedham Square excels at teaching people to dance because of our Private Lesson based programs. Private Lessons are the most valuable lessons, because of their individualized approach. On your private lesson your instructor will introduce new concepts of dancing one on one or as a couple. Having the information presented in this one on one format allows the instructor to focus on your needs and tailor the information to you. Every person learns differently and at their own rate. Private Dance Lessons allow you to move at your own pace without the pressure of a group, and develop a much deeper understanding of movement in a fraction of the time. On your Private Dance Lesson you can feel how each dance is supposed to feel through your teacher’s movement.
Group Lessons: Are prescheduled 45 min classes and are available to view on our calendar . Group Lessons will usually have 8-12 students and 1 instructor. Most Group Classes will be focused on one dance (with the exception of the beginner classes) and are designed to teach the “mechanics” of dancing. Balance, control, rhythm and coordination are especially prevalent in the Group Classes because you’re dancing on your own. You will also have the opportunity in Group Class to learn both the lead and follow part of the step. This is especially helpful to understand what your partner is doing while you’re dancing together.
Practice Parties: are a the practice for the big game! The atmosphere at the Party is similar to what you would see when you go out to use your dancing. Wether you’re dancing at a wedding reception, at a salsa club, a black tie gala, or specifically at a ballroom dancing event you will need to know how to navigate a floor. Practice your moves with different people ( leading and following).
Practice dancing with other people on the floor (floor craft i.e.. navigation).
Socialize with other people (builds confidence and community).
Practice putting steps together consecutively to a whole song (blending and ad libbing).

At Fred Astaire Dance Studios we work with all kinds of students from beginners to advanced no matter what age. Our students range in the 30-65 range, but we have students as young as 7 years old and as old as 80+ years of age.
Not every teacher can dance and not every dancer can teach. Always hire teachers that can provide proof of certification for the levels that they are teaching. Every one of our teachers goes through rigorous teacher training and several examinations that give them the proper qualifications to teach ballroom dance.
Over the past 10 years, our professionals have been exclusively selected for Dancing With The Stars events in our sorrounding area, including Dedham, Needham, Norwood, Brookline and others.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
There are many reasons for taking up dance lessons and some of them have very little to do with dancing. Think about how you want to benefit from dancing. Ballroom dancing is that perfect combination of physical activity, social interaction, and mental stimulation, and it can bring so much to your life. It’s a great workout; has documented physical and mental health benefits; can enhance your social life and self-confidence; reduces stress and depression; promotes relaxation; is a wonderful outlet for self-expression and creativity; and it’s FUN!!

Everyone learns differently, so we like to meet you first to learn a little more about you and your learning style. That's why we offer a free introductory lesson. During this lesson, you will meet with an instructor to go over your goals, learn a few of the basics and determine what lesson plan is most adecuate, should you chose to continue.
