About Mat
I've been a professional working artist for the past 13 years, and I want to help others achieve their dreams; whether it's to learn a new fun skill, or to become a professional artist themselves. My new studio overlooking the Lowry bridge in NE Minneapolis provides the best possible creative learning environment.
Every student is unique, and so is their learning. Unlike large group lessons where you can get left behind, I offer a bespoke lesson plan that ensures you or a small group of your friends are able to learn at your own pace and towards your own artistic goals.
My journey as an art instructor began when I was invited to lead a demo at the Perpich Center for Arts Education shortly after I had graduated from the institution. That experience led to a few more opportunities to lead demos and teach group classes at my own studio.
Recently, I decided to devote more time to teaching after completing my position on the Perpich Board of Directors earlier this year. I find great joy in sharing my knowledge and helping aspiring artists hone their skills, and I am excited to continue to do so in the years to come.
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and I also studied painting and drawing at the Accademia di Bella Arti in Florence, Italy. Additionally, I served as a board member for the Perpich Center for Arts Education for 9 years. I also won a MN State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant in 2016, 2018, and 2020.
For the past 13 years, I have been working as a full-time artist, and my artwork has been acquired by several notable corporate collections, including Ogletree Deakins, Hyatt Regency, Loews Hotels, BI Worldwide, and the Weisman Art Museum.

Our initial meeting is a complimentary consultation designed to discuss your aspirations and objectives. During this session, I will review samples of your previous work (if you have any) or any sources of inspiration that may contribute to your desired outcome. Based on this information, we will collaborate on a personalized lesson plan and schedule your first session while also providing you with a comprehensive list of materials.
The first hour is instruction and demonstrations, followed by two hours of independent work time. There is no obligation to stay for the full three hours, the studio is available for students to utilize during that time. However, if you feel more comfortable working from home, you are welcome to leave after the first hour. Additionally, I am happy to conduct our meetings through Zoom should you prefer this option.

I have worked with a diverse range of students with varying skill sets and backgrounds. From young teenagers seeking to build their portfolios for art school to seasoned artists seeking to learn a new medium quickly, I have taught individuals from all disciplines and levels of expertise.
No matter their starting point, I believe that anyone can develop their artistic abilities with dedication and guidance. I always strive to create a supportive and welcoming environment in my classes, one that encourages experimentation and creativity while also providing practical instruction and feedback.

Attending one of my student's art shows is a recent experience that I hold dear. Witnessing their growth and progress as an artist was truly inspiring, and I felt an immense sense of pride as I saw their hard work on display for the world to see.
There's nothing quite like seeing someone you've taught achieve their goals and pursue their passions, and it is moments like these that reaffirm why I love teaching. Being able to share in the joy and excitement of my students as they express themselves through their art is a privilege and a source of great fulfillment for me.

As patient as he is talented, Mat is an excellent teacher. I learned a lot from him and I always felt more like a collaborator than a student. It made me so much more confident in trying new things knowing that he was there to support me. My skills have improved and I know that, when I'm ready to take the next step, he'll be there to guide me through it.
After I retired, I wanted to learn how to paint the places my wife and I were planning to visit. I had always been interested in painting, but books and watching videos just didn't do the trick. I heard about Mat from some friends of mine who bought one of his paintings and said that he was willing to teach me how to paint! I figured I was a lost cause, but he was able to help me learn the basics and soon I was able to paint anything I wanted! It was an amazing experience, and now I'm able to paint all the places my wife and I go to on vacation.

Details
For individual lessons, my standard rate is $60 per session, though I offer discounted rates for group lessons.
For those who require additional studio time outside of their weekly lesson, I offer the opportunity to schedule and purchase two-hour blocks of studio time for $20. This way, students can continue working on their projects in a comfortable and supportive environment.
