About Mya
Hello!
My name is Mya and I am an undergraduate studying English at Columbia University.
I previously served as a volunteer tutor at a local elementary school teaching language arts. There, I worked one-on-one with students to improve their reading comprehension and grammar skills. As a high school student, I took the AP exams for English Literature and English Language and respectively scored a 5 and 4. I subsequently gained full admission to universities like UC Berkeley, UCLA, Pratt, and Columbia.
I hope to help students broaden their appreciation for literature and become more comfortable when faced with difficult readings. Writing ability is an essential component for success in college and beyond, so my aim is to equip every student to write at the best of their ability.
I enjoy watching students come to view reading and writing as way to share their stories and experience the stories of others.
At Columbia, all freshmen are required to take introductory writing and literature courses that train us to thoroughy assess a reading down to the sentence level. As a result, I am able to work with a student to maintain the same rigorous approach. In the long run, this will prepare the student to fully understand difficult literature and construct strong written arguments. These skills will last well after our sessions.
If your student is interested in creative writing, I have extensive experience in writing poetry and fiction. I would be happy to work with the student to explore non-academic writing, which would prove beneficial during this time as children need a productive outlet like the rest of us
