About James
I have graduate degrees in History and Black World Studies, four years of experience in teaching undergraduates, and have won a number of awards from my universities for my work.
I am passionate about history and teaching. It is too often that instructors, particularly in high schools and universities, often don't have the time to help every student. That's where I come in! I'm happy to lend my teaching experience, skills, and passion to educating students on social studies.
I began teaching formally when I began my Master's degree in History in 2016 at Ohio University. Prior to this, I had tutored and given guest lectures while at Miami University. I have known I wanted to teach since I was in early high school and have pursued that goal since then.
I have four years of experience teaching undergraduate students at Ohio University, mostly in the History Department. I've also guest lectured in Media Arts & Studies, the Center for International Studies, Anthropology, and African Studies. In the broad topic of Social Studies, I have taken classes in the topic since high school; I am working on my PhD in History currently, having already completed two previous degrees in History and Black World Studies. I can comfortably tutor students on any specific aspect of Social Studies.

My process for working with a new student is to first find out what they're studying for specifically--better grades overall, a specific test, college entrance exams, etc. Next, I try to learn their particular interests in the general topic (i.e. what is their favorite part of the subject). This can help in keeping the topic interesting and making sure they stay engaged. Finally, as we go through the first few lessons, I pay attention to what style of teaching works best for them and how they learn best (i.e. through images, extensive notes, etc.).
I've worked mostly with undergraduate college students, but I've also tutored high school students in history and social studies. Likewise, I have tutored several grade school students in the same topics.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think through what goals they have for their tutoring (higher overall grades, passing a specific test, college prep, etc.), what their particular interests are within the topic, and how many sessions they think they would need to achieve their goal.

Details
Depending on the topic, level of complexity, and time required, I charge between $20 and $50 per hour. For example, for a one-time lesson preparing a student for a high school Social Studies final, the cost would be $25.
