About Jim

I coached college equestrian teams for 35 years for Miami of Ohio, Ohio State, Ohio University, Xavier University, Liberty University, and Murray State University, and had a National Champion IEA team and competitive hunter and jumper riders from my own farm in Cincinnati for 25 years. I coached more than 30 National Champions over the years, and had National Champion teams in NCAA, IHSA, and IEA. I have an arena in Laurinburg where riders can ship in and ride, or I am willing to drive to your place. I'm about 45 minutes from Southern Pines. Now I'm retired from college coaching and make a living with "horse show services": i judge a lot of horse shows, teach a lot of clinics, do jump course design, build jumps, manage horse shows, and still teach in between all the travel. Riding is a reflection of life in general, and we develop skills that will make succesful people in any field - self-discipline, attention to detail, care for another over self, confidence, and all the highs and lows that require a good sense of humor.

My first full time teaching was as a graduate student, when I was assigned to coach the college equestrian team.  I intended to be a breeding farm manager after Univeristy of Kentucky, but had some early success in coaching and stayed with it.



I grew up riding in Ohio and Midwest, competed on the University of Kentucky Equestrian Team, and earned BS and MS in Equine Nutrition.  I have made a fulltime living in the horse industry since 1982.

Quick interview beforehand or in the ring to determine past experience and riding goals.  Some riders are super competitive, while others want to learn and enjoy.  A short period of watching current skills, and then off we go in whatever direction you want to move. 



I have done everything over the years, but would like to continue to focus on teenage to adult riders who are serious about perfecting their jumping.  I would like to work with people who want to be competitive, even if you don't show alot.  I have coached National Champions from middle school to college, and had state association champions with adult riders as well.  Recently, a Beckett Run student was Reserve National Champion in the collegiate "Cacchione Cup", the individual Championship that is the headline event of the college Nationals.  Another former student was MVP of the NCAA National Horse Show.  I've taught many riders who have gone on to be professionals in their own businesses, or coaching their own college teams.



When looking for a riding instructor, as in looking for a horse to purchase, choose carefully.  This is a dangerous and expensive sport.  Find someone who can really help you in your sport, and at the same time you need to find someone with whom you enjoy spending time.
