About Michael
Experts say that 97% of everything you need to know to keep you and your family safe has nothing to do with kicking and punching.
I primarily teach personal safety. I also teach karate and several traditional weapons.
I provide private and small group lessons in my home, scheduled at your convenience.
I teach anyone over the age of 13 years. This includes the elderly and infirm, the young and bullied, and people with a variety of disabilities.
My classes are different from any martial arts school that I know of. I teach prevention, observation, avoidance, and escape. I don't just teach fighting.
Current martial arts students may also benefit from this information.
• Second degree black belt in Shorin Ryu; modified by study of krav maga, kobudo, and other arts over the past 20 years.
• Certified Martial Arts Instructor.
• 20 years' study of violence: reasons for violence, actions to minimize your risk, identification of potential violent situations and persons, avoidance of violence, escape from violent situations, dealing with physical, emotional, legal, aftermath of a violent encounter, mental preparation for confronting violence.
• Retired from a 40-year career as a registered nurse, and so quite comfortable with modifying a karate program for people with a variety of disabilities.

I achieved a second degree black belt under Mike Wall at Paradise Valley Karate, in Phoenix, Arizona.
I have studied other arts, including krav maga (yellow belt) at Georgia Mountain Krav Maga with instructor Hal Herndon.
I practice a variety of Okinawan and Japanese weapons, including a 4-foot stick (jo) that translates well to canes, walking sticks, rakes, broomsticks, and similar items.
I am certified as a martial arts instructor by the Martial Arts Teacher's Association.
