About Kirstie
My name is Kirstie Beaton and I have been working as an environmental educator for over 6 years. I have experience teaching students of all ages in both outdoor and indoor settings, and the majority of my experience is working with 6th - 12th graders. I hold a B.A. from Smith College (MA) with concentrations in biodiversity, ecology, and conservation.
I worked as a Master Educator at Chincoteague Bay Field Station (VA) teaching marine biology and coastal ecology for 3 years, before moving to Massachusetts. Currently I am the education coordinator for a non-profit specializing in creating and delivering environmental science and STEM programs to public and private school students throughout Southeastern MA.
As a teacher I employ inquiry based methods because I want my students to have the best educational experience possible. I believe that it is my responsibility to remain flexible and accommodate all learning styles and allow students to express themselves in the ways that best suit them. I want students to feel comfortable and part of the learning process always. Lastly, I believe that I should be aware of my students’ curiosities and interests and provide opportunities where students can freely explore those interests. Maintaining student curiosity and providing them the tools and confidence to freely explore their interests will result in enriching educational experiences for both student and teacher.
My favorite part about being an educator is watching students connect with something new for the first time and develop a real interest in the topic. You can almost see the lightbulbs go off right over their heads, and for me, that is really exciting. Another part of teaching I enjoy, especially in my field of environmental education, is seeing specific students who struggle with traditional classroom learning engage with concepts in new ways that work for them. I have had the wonderful experience of having classroom teachers express to me after class and say they have never been able to get "X" student to raise their hand or answer questions before.
I got started teaching in 2014 when I was working as a program assistant at Chincoteague Bay Field Station. I had a degree in biology, saw what the educators were doing, and thought I would would give it a try. Teaching is definitely something I fell into and did not consider doing when I was in college, but since I found it, I have completely fallen in love with it. Working with students and sharing my passion for science and the environment has lit up something within myself that I never knew was there.
I was trained as an environmental educator at Chincoteague Bay Field Station, specifically using inquiry-based teaching methods through BEETLES (Better Environmental Education, Teaching, Learning, and Expertise Sharing) training.

When working with a new student, I initially want to develop a positive rapport with them, which includes not only general introductions but also getting to know my student. I like to ask about their interests, what they do for fun or extracurriculars, if they have a special skill or talent they like to share, and basically work to establish an easy conversational flow while finding common ground. I also think it's important to tell a student my educational background and experiences in case something I've taught or studied sparks an interest in them for later studies.
I also think it's important talk with a student about their personal goals. What are they looking to gain from our tutoring sessions? Are they just looking for help in a specific subject or are there any bigger picture skills they are looking to gain to improve their learning? Is there a specific project or assignment they know they'll need help preparing for? Are there ways for us as a team to reduce a student's anxiety surrounding schoolwork, tests, projects, etc.?
I have worked with students of all ages, including adult learners.
