About Rick
I offer a unique combination of training and experience. I have a BS and MS in math with an undergraduate minor in secondary education. I have worked for two years as a full-time high school math teacher and five years as a university faculty member in electrical engineering and math. I had a significant career in engineering including applications of mathematics in solving real-world problems. From 2018 to 2021 I was a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, where I taught Calculus 1 and 2 (equivalent of AP Calculus AB and BC) to nearly 1000 undergraduates.

When I work with students who need help with math I first focus on listening closely to diagnose where the blockers are. I enjoy breaking down complex math tasks to individual skills, zeroing in on those blockers and helping the student to remove them. With the blockers understood and addressed we can then build up the remaining skills to get back to the complex task that the student needs to master.
My first teaching experience was as a waterfront counselor at Boy Scout camp when I was in high school. I taught swimming, lifesaving, rowing and canoeing for six summers through high school and college. While in high school I also tutored some of my peers in mathematics. My first classroom experiences were as an undergraduate teaching assistant in mathematics at Michigan State University and as a student teacher in high school math, physics, and chemistry. After graduating from Michigan State I taught math and science for two years at a public high school (grades 8 - 12) in Australia.
I completed a minor in secondary education as part of my undergraduate work at Michigan State University. This included coursework in education and a 10-week term of student teaching in a public high school. I have two years of experience teaching full-time in a public high school and five years teaching either full-time or part-time at three different universities.

It is important to do a lot of listening at the start of a tutoring relationship. First I work on understanding everyone's goals - parents as well as student - for the engagement. Then I use a variety of methods to identify the obstacles the student is facing that are interfering with achieving their goals. I review schoolwork and give some targeted diagnostic exercises to assess the student's skill level and also to determine the student's learning style and study practices. Based on this I start breaking down the subject matter so as to isolate and strengthen key skills. I also look at the scheduling considerations and upcoming key events such as tests in order to set up a plan that makes sense in the context of the student's school environment.
The past four years I have taught nearly 1000 college undergraduates taking introductory Calculus I and II. I have also tutored several high-school students on line in pre-calculus and calculus, including AP Calculus AB and BC.
It is important to feel confident in and comfortable with the individual you choose to work with. You should look at qualifications but also pay attention to how you feel about being around this person. You need to find a person who will help you find what you are good at and strengthen the areas where you need help, but not make you feel bad about your challenges.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about why you are doing this and what you expect to achieve. Be prepared to talk about both of these. Try to identify what specific obstacles you believe are getting in the way.
Ask yourself if you are prepared to do additional work that your tutor will give you in order to achieve your goals. Ask yourself if you expect the tutor to make you learn or if you feel that learning is your responsibility and you are seeking a tutor to help you accomplish that.

Pre-Calculus on-line tutoring: $55 per hour
Calculus on-line tutoring - $55 per hour
Longer or shorter sessions available on a pro-rated basis.
In-person tutoring - add $15 per session for travel time.
My services include up to 30 additional minutes of on-demand remote homework help per hour of tutoring, scheduled as mutually agreed by tutor and student, plus custom worksheets as needed.
