The past two years, I have been teaching 8th grade math. As we get ready for the first meeting, I typically ask new students to bring homework and notes so I can get a feel for what they are currently learning in school and into what depth. I have also asked parents to contact their teacher to ask what topic they recently learned, are learning and what's next. Then, I can put together games to review and get an idea of any learning gaps the student may have.
