About Evan
I have been teaching private lessons for 33 years, and have been a working musician/performer for 37 years. I am widely recognized as one of the world's premier mandolin soloists, and was a featured performer on mandolin and fiddle at the world's most famous theme park (starts with a D) for 10,000+ shows over 16 years. I have been a Featured Guest Artist at more than 2 dozen Symphony Pops concerts, including the Houston Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, and the Buffalo Philharmonic. I love to teach; several of my former students have notable careers as performers. In addition to private teaching, I have taught at numerous workshops, conferences and conventions all over the USA. My teaching philosophy is to cultivate the greatest possible general skill level and multifaceted understanding of the instrument and of music, but I do my best also to accommodate the student who only wants to work in one style.

B.A. in Music, Violin Performance emphasis, Occidental College 1980, Phi Beta Kappa and Departmental Honors. Studied privately in the 1980s with some of Europe's premier Classical mandolinists. I have worked with students of all ages and experience levels at numerous festivals, conferences, and workshops, including workshops with youth orchestras.

During a first session with new students, I ask what their goals are, and I ask them to play one or two pieces to give me an idea about current skill level and stylistic preferences. I then outline a basic course of study, and ask if this sounds like what they are hoping to learn.
I have worked with students of all ages and skill levels. I do not insist on any prerequisite skill level, but I enthusiastically advise my students: The more they practice between lessons, the more they will enjoy the lessons and the music they play.

Not all great musicians are great teachers but Evan Marshall is. He combines world class virtuosity with exceptional teaching skills and a patient, affirming approach. He has mastered a vast range of musical styles and his knowledge of music theory is astounding. Evan will teach serious students of any skill level. His practice strategies are particularly helpful. I highly recommend Evan as an instructor for students interested in classical music, bluegrass, folk, rock or any other musical genre. If you want the highest quality instruction from an "all around good guy," Evan is your man.
Mr. Marshall has taught our teenage son fiddle for over a year. We appreciate Mr. Marshall’s engaging teaching style. His enthusiasm is contagious and his explanations are easy to understand and tend to elevate understanding and interest in the subject. For example, lessons on technique have included references to contrasts and similarities to other musical genre. Such a reference on one occasion helped our son to improve his technique, and reminded him how he enjoyed a classical piece, which he subsequently added to his practice for enjoyment. Moreover, after attending fiddle camp, our son observed how Mr. Marshall is setting a firm foundation in skill and repertoire.
