About Alec

My favorite part of teaching is finding what will inspire my students with music.

When I was in high school, a friend of mine in the orchestra asked me if I ever taught before or wanted to teach his little sister who was in 5th grade. I was straight forward with him saying, "You know I've never done this before right?" and he said "Well everyone has to start somewhere!" That is how I got my first student, she was my Guinea Pig for sure for me to try out a few teaching styles before I found my way of how I wanted to teach which unfortunately took a year of her frustration. I learned so much from her, and she was very patient with me and allowed me to really refine my teaching style to what it is today.

I received my Bachelors of Music in Cello Performance from California State Univeristy Northridge in 2021.

I am a coach for local middle and high schools, specializing in teaching beginning cello.

We start rather slowly and clearly to make sure that we have a well established foundation of posture to grow from. My methods mimic the Suzuki Method but with my own twists and music.

I'd like to say I have worked with quite the variety. I've taught as young as 5 and as old as 83, all sorts of levels of cello proficiency as well as preparing student's for college auditions (all of which have gotten in!). Some of the student's I find the most interesting are ones that have played other instruments to a proficient level wanting to learn cello, the technical issues they have adjusting to the cello is so different from normal students that pose a great and fun challenge for me.

I think asking yourself what it is exactly what you are looking for from your teacher so that you are better able to describe your needs to them. We are usually able to figure it out eventually, but it takes time getting to know each other for that to happen. For example, I have a student that didn't exactly have an interest in classical music. He was "fine" with it, but it was causing him to not enjoy the lessons or practicing. After about 6 months of getting to know him, I asked him his opinion of classical music with the suspicion that he didn't like it and I was right. After that I started arranging music from the genre's he did like so that he was playing music he liked while working on the technique he needed to work on.

My favorite moments in teaching are the "ahhh" moments when the student realizes what they need to do to get better at the instrument, and start actually practicing and applying whats taught in the lessons. It's when they get that spark of love for the instrument that I hope all of my students get, but don't always start out with. I have this young middle school aged girl that recently had this moment playing a piece I love teaching, and it surprised me because student's usually don't get that when they are that young, just not mature enough yet! She is a blast to teach, and now with this spark she is only going up from here.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How much time are you able to dedicate to this a day is important. I ask my students to practice a minimum of 10 min every day because practicing every day establishes the best technique, like wearing a retainer when you skip a day there's a chance things don't stick.

What kind of music most interests you. I personally make sure to include some classical music in my students repertoire but if they are also interested in, let's say, the Beatles I'll include some Beatles music that I would arrange for their level. This makes practicing a little easier and more fun, especially in the beginning when cello is the most difficult to start up.
