About Colin

Hi! I'm so glad you are interested in learning how to play the piano :) Neurologists have determined learning a musical instrument is essential in the development of critical reasoning, motor coordination and emotional intuition (concealed information)

My name is Colin McDearman, and I am a professional pianist with concerts given across the U.S. and Europe. I have been the first prize winner of many prestigious piano competitions such as the Zimerlini solo piano competition and the Mary O' Fearing Piano Competition. I have a B.A. from Millsaps College, M.M. from the UNCG School of Music, Theatre and Dance, and will be an entering Doctorate student at the USC Thornton School of Music in August with a TA position. In 2015 I was one of 8 American pianists selected to attend the prestigious American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France; whose past faculty members have included Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Henri Dutilleux, and Sviatoslav Richter.

Beginning the journey to learning ANY musical instrument can seem to be quite the daunting task, but with my 20 years of experience teaching professionally at the University level and privately, I promise to walk with you and make the journey enjoyable. I have experience teaching all ages, and specialize in training promising young students and/or advanced pianists.

If you are interested in videos of me performing, they can be sent on request.

I enjoy the personal relationships I am able to nurture with my students. Playing piano is a unique artistic endeavour, and it's metaphorical and temporal nature lends it the ability to allow one to uncover more about oneself as they gain the tools and knowledge necessary to foist their own personality and style through the instrument. I am a "people-person" at heart, and understand the ultimate aim of music is to cultivate a love for performing and playing music, regardless of the venue or audience.

When I was 16 years old, I began teaching my sister. It....was't necessarily the most enjoyable experience. Nevertheless, I decided I enjoyed it, and throughout the rest of my life (I'm 30 years old now) I have continued the journey.

I am a current faculty member at the Cary School of Music and maintain a robust studio of award-winning pianists of all ages (caryschoolofmusic.com). I have a Master's degree in piano performance and have taught as an adjunct faculty member for over 2 years at the University level. I have performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, and have culminated a career as a prize-winner in many national and international competitions. I have performed as a soloist with the MSO Orchestra, UNCG Orchestra, and the Fontainebleau Orchestra.

I initially gauge the student's ultimate aim. Where does the student envision themself one year down the road? If the picture is unclear, that is also perfectly okay! Determining what type of music the student is interested in is also important. As a jazz and classical pianist, I understand what it means to have an eclectic taste. Determing past experience is also important: does the student have experience with playing a musical instrument? I tailor my teaching methods to each individual depending on their ultimate goal and level of experience in piano.

I have worked with students ranging from ages 5-73. I specialize in training gifted, young students with prior experience in piano, but will accept all kinds upon consideration. My students have won awards at the state and regional level in competitions such as MTNA and the Young Artist Competition.

I would recommend asking to see/hear them perform. I am a firm believer that if the teacher can't produce something artistic that's above and beyond the current level of the student, they lack the ability to convey and determine what steps the student needs to take to continue their own, personal musical journey.

Well, with the current quarantine situation, I decided to get out of my house and go hiking at a local park. My wife has been stuck in Canada (she is a Canadian citizen and the border is closed due to Covid-19) and I've been a bit lonely. Being able to be surrounded by nature and hearing the music it produces was truly a healing experience.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
That's dependent on the individual. Don't ever be afraid to ask anything YOU feel is pertinent.

My standard rate for a private, one-hour lesson is $70. This might seem a bit expensive, but I'm leveraging years of experience as a professional performer and competitor in a cut-throat industry that accepts only the top performers and discards the rest.
