Our passion for music defines, drives and permeates everything we do. This aesthetic is so ingrained in the whole cultural legacy in Russia, where I was born, that almost all children there are exposed to music education from very early age, both in the school setting and at their home. After receiving my academic training first at Kharkiv and then at Moscow State Conservatories, I have launched my career as a concert pianist and a piano professor at the age of 18. With over 50 years of experience in both performance and teaching, I am happy to provide students of any level and age with a customized training that would accommodate their individual needs and abilities.
My method is founded on the esteemed Russian piano school, that has been prominent worldwide for over one hundred and fifty years. After opening the first conservatory in Russia in 1862, the music training approach in Russia has gradually built a very strong teaching philosophy over the years. In this highly developed system, that leads students on their journey of music education, everything is based on sound perception, imagination and step-by-step guided learning, so that an individual student can gradually become self-sufficient. Russia is famous for having produced many great virtuoso pianists. The common myth is that Russian students are spending all their time practicing technical drills, but there is much more to the Russian music system. It teaches HOW to practice correctly without becoming a hammering machine, HOW to absorb huge volume of musical information, HOW to make sure that the notes and fingers are just the tools to express one’s emotional perception of the world around. One of the key achievements of this approach lies in the overall development of the student’s mind, because both perception and musical expression are directly based on their knowledge and personal emotional and intellectual richness. Conversely, the opposite is true as well - consistent study of classical music is known to broaden one’s horizon and provide higher viewpoints.
I believe that everybody should study music because it is the best way to enhance brain development and express emotions, while bringing joy to other people. There are many proven cognitive benefits associated with learning to play a piano, such as improved math and language skills, strengthened hand-eye-ear coordination and increased creativity. Piano performance is also a great and challenging professional field. I have taught hundreds of students and saw many of them go on to become excellent professional pianists and teachers.
I got started teaching right after I enterd Music College at 15 years old with College Preparatory Program and my private students
I have been trained in Russia with best music teaching system. I have been also blessed with teachers, one of whom was a sister of piano legend Vladimir Horowitz Regina Horowitz.
I passed through all steps in piano learning institutions in Russia beginning with Music School for ages from 7 to 14 to Music College from 15 to 19, Conservatory (Music University in Russia) and Post Graduated Course (Equivalent to PHD).
After my study I got a position of Full Professor in Kharkov Conservatory and for my Concert Activities a title of Honores Artist of Ukraine given by President of the country

It is important to find out what new student already knows and can do.
Next step is to find appropriate language to describe specifics of piano playing and reasons to study music in generally. Each student is unique and sometimes needs very different words that others.
Next steps are defined by age of a student and his/her musical abilities.
As I always said every student is talented, you need just to find the key to unlock the talent
I worked with all ages and levels of students teaching beginners, College students, College teachers and retired adults.
Look for experienced teacher and make sure to define your goals in piano playing and what level you would like to achieve.
Very few people who are playing music instruments are going to be professional musicians. Most of them are going to be an educated music lovers who could bring joy to themselfs and to other people by playing

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you don't know how to read music ask if it's possible to start to learn playing right away (My answer is Yes)
If you are advanced player ask about the ways to improve your skill.
And in generally there will be much more questions when you start your lessons

He is a good good teacher and above all a good person
My sons, 14 and 10, have been learning from Mr. Polusmiak for 6 years. While both my kids have different personalities, he deals with each accordingly and patiently. He takes them to the next level and really cares about making them better musicians. He gives them lots of individual attention and feedback on how to be better. They always feel like they've learned more with each lesson. His passion for piano is contagious and I can't recommend him enough.
Sergei Polusmiak is first-class pianist and teacher. As his student and colleague I can recommend to everyone his lessons. Beginners immediately get the right direction in piano study and can avoid the problems associated with unprofessional first steps. Those who already know how to play learn to see notes and hear music in a new way. Technical difficulties are easily resolved, and a few words spoken on time renew and transform students’ playing. Homework is changing from a routine into a creative process

My price is $45 per 30 min lesson (I do also 45 min and 1 hour lessons for those who want to get more advance instructions). This price is based on my teaching experience, my professional skills of the high level performing artist and my students’ awards and honors.
What students will learn from my lessons are great piano technique, music theory and history, music sensitivity and passion. “Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can’t get it wrong.”
