About Spencer

I strongly believe piano teaching must be a balance of musical and technical exploration, and I strive to cater lessons to each student's individual needs.

I love so many things about teaching, but my greatest joy is perhaps received when I observe the "lightbulb moment" in which a problem is solved, or a difficulty made easier, for a student.

I started teaching my neighbors down the street, before I had entered high school.   Progression went from there, and I am now on the piano faculty of the Longy School of Music in Boston and maintain a private studio in New York City.

Degrees from the following:

Bachelor of Music - Oberlin Conservatory of Music

Master of Music - The Juilliard School

Doctor of Musical Arts - Stony Brook University

Teaching experience:

Piano Faculty:  Longy School of Music (Cambridge, MA) - 2016-present

Visiting Piano Faculty: Oberlin Conservatory of Music - Spring 2010 and Fall 2019

Visiting Piano Faculty: Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music - Spring 2005

Private teaching: 1992 - Present

I devise a work process unique to each student, based on his/her previous piano education, technical strength/flaws, areas of repertoire yet to be explored, etc.  While certain elements are consistent for all (stylish phrasing, hand position, quality of sound, etc.), each student is different and a workable pace -- and amount/type of material -- must be catered on an individual basis.

Presently I work with college-age advanced students, but I have taught all levels.
