About Kachina

I have worked in a leading/counseling capacity with children for over 10 years at summer and day camps as well as babysitting. To me it's not just about the academics, but how the students grow and learn about themselves and their potential.

In all honesty, I have no formal training for tutoring, just a sharp mind and a desire to see students succeed. I am dedicated to my students and their goals. For now I work alone and so I will only be taking on a couple of students at a time so that I may focus my time and energy on them.

I am a college student at a liberal arts school where keeping up with all areas of education is encouraged and expected. I personally receive high marks in writing, reading, and science. My other subjects do not struggle, they are simply not as much my forte.

I often help other students with studying tips and habits, paper writing, project analyzing, and time management. When a fellow student is able to come to me with joy on their faces from having completed something they thought was hopeless it sometimes makes me wish I went into teaching as a career.

I enjoy seeing students progress and comprehend information that they never thought they could understand. I got my love of this through spending time with my nieces and watching them explore their worlds.

I began with supporting my young nieces in their academics and life in general. I then moved on to volunteering at a day camp focused on teaching environmental sciences. When I began my higher education, it became par for the course to work with and tutor other students in an unofficial capacity.

I also work with adults on life matters such as budgeting, work ethic, time management, social engagement, and mental/emotional health.

About the lesson

The first step in working with a new student is to understand their current abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Where are they struggling the most and where are they excelling. This will mean looking at their overall academic performance, not just the subject they have requested help in.

Once I have a base for their needs, I will look at the curriculum itself, all of it, and see how much work is being given and at what levels.

All of this helps me understand why they are succeeding in certain areas and not others. hopefully this will allow me to use this information to make their learning process easier, smoother, and more connected across subjects, harnessing their strengths to naturally encourage their weaknesses.

Children and adults aged 5-26. These have come from a variety of backgrounds, mental ability, and learning disabilities.

Knowledge of a subject does not necessarily equate to the ability to teach said subject at a level the student can understand. The education of the tutor is important, but their ability to connect personally and academically with the student can make a world of difference

A good friend of mine was stuggling in a class, not because she did not understand the subject, but because she could not figure out how to get the information out of her head and onto paper.

After working with her, she was able to complete the assignments and gain the courage to approach the professor for extra instruction and help. She passed the class and it ended up being one of her favorites.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- Do I understand the subject

- If so, why am I struggling

- If not, why? content, teaching style, or something else

- Is there a particular piece of the subject I am having trouble with that is affecting others

- Is it a problem with the content or perhaps studying habits, note taking, or time management

Details

I have a beginning/trial rate of $20/hour to cover my time for the first 5 lessons. If the level of tutoring is acceptable to the student/parent the price raises to $35/hour.

This is negotiable depending on financial situations. $5 will be added to both of these rates if travel is necessary for me, and deducted if it is necessary for the student.
