Jane is an excellent and supportive instructor. She has so much foundational knowledge of voice and anatomy, and I have been amazed at the various ways she uses pedagogy, metaphors, and even some yoga/physical exercises to help me understand the elements of voice. And the languages!! I digress... As context I am an adult learner and my background is in learning science (focus on math), but gosh, I have had so many insights about learning from the other side as a student in a foreign subject. Singing is so different than anything I've ever done, but I feel so lucky to have Jane as my teacher, not only because I have seen so much improvement in my singing ability in 1 year, but because even when I feel unsure or know I didn't do something perfectly, I can count on her to cheer me on and celebrate good progress.

Jane Shivick is an extraordinary voice teacher. What is especially remarkable about her is how excellent she is at diagnosing and then solving problems in vocal technique. I first started with Jane when a friend told me ,”I used to have a lot of problems with tension in my jaw and now I don’t anymore.” I can say ditto to that. She knows a lot about the physiology of singing and is able to communicate that so effectively. I continue to grow in feeling how to sing physically and in understanding good vocal technique in an intellectual way. It makes all my singing, even at the extremes of my range, easier, more fun, and makes studying with Jane exciting! I have learned so much that it astounds me when I think about it. She is also a master at carefully layering her teaching to deal with just one or two key issues at a time and then building to more sophisticated layers of study. She is an excellent role model, a consummate professional about how she studies music herself, and her expectations as a teacher are ambitious, even for those of us who study as a hobby rather than a vocation. She is sensitive to the individual needs and personalities of the students she teaches and seems to know when to push and when to praise.

Jane Shivick came to me as a recommendation from an acquaintance. At the time, my son had an interest in musicals and improving his singing abilities. After 3 years of vocal lessons with Jane, my so was accepted to one of the most prestigious music colleges in the United States Carnegie Mellon School of Music in Pittsburgh. When I look back there were times I questioned the process, not truly understanding the arts. But he loved every lesson and I let the process happen. Jane is the real deal if you or your child wants to have a future in vocal performance. Many people can teach you how to sing, Jane is the coach you want if you truly want to know your potential as a vocal performer.

I have studied classical voice with Jane Shivick for five years now, and can say with absolute confidence that she is a true musician – a formidable vocalist and thoughtful performer with a colorful career to her credit. Jane ingrains good technique and healthy vocal habit in her students from early on, and seems to take joy in helping students shape their performances through expression and interpretation. She has a seemingly bottomless stack of repertoire books from which to choose new and daring pieces, but is also very reasonable about assignments and open to student input. She has given me a love for classical voice as a form.

My daughter began studying with Jane at the beginning of her senior year in high school. She had studied voice for more than seven years, but realized that she needed a teacher with the expertise to prepare her for college auditions focused on opera, not musical theatre.

A university music professor referred us to Jane, assuring us that, “Jane’s students are well prepared.” In truth, there is no detail that Jane doesn’t address. She recommended audition pieces that met the criteria for seven colleges, arranged a venue for pre-audition taping and even guided my daughter in selecting her attire. During lessons, each audition piece was taught and rehearsed with an emphasis on musicality, diction and poise. Most importantly, Jane has always been honest with my daughter. If something needs work, she states it directly and constructively, as only an exceptional teacher can do.

Jane instructed my daughter on the proper way to communicate with a pianist and the best way to organize music for accompaniment. To prepare her for auditions and beyond, Jane arranged lessons with a professional accompanist who allowed my daughter to record music for rehearsing and helped her pinpoint areas on which to concentrate. Jane knowledgably discussed college programs with my daughter and helped her narrow down the programs that would benefit her the most. She communicated with my daughter before each audition, encouraging her to focus and do her best. The first person my daughter contacted after each audition was Jane Shivick.

During the past six months, my daughter has worked really, really hard. Under Jane’s guidance, she has become a better singer and more confident performer. Two college professors who knew my daughter from a summer camp and a private lesson, remarked on the incredible growth in her voice and technique in such a short time. As a mom, I see a confidence in my daughter that comes from being well prepared.

Lessons with Jane require a weekly 100-mile round trip. I drive while my daughter studies or sleeps. But it is a trip we gladly make to work with such a kind and gifted teacher. And, yes, the vocal performance auditions have been very successful with acceptances at each of her top schools. Jane Shivick changed my daughter’s life.
