Teaching Method & Techniques:
I employ a student-centered approach that focuses on active learning, hands-on activities, and real-world application of concepts. For reading, I use a combination of guided reading, phonics practice, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies to help students not only understand the material but also enjoy the learning process. For TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), I incorporate interactive language games, conversation practice, and listening comprehension exercises to improve fluency and pronunciation while making learning enjoyable and practical. I emphasize understanding the language in context, rather than rote memorization, so students can effectively use English in real-world situations.
TEFL Lesson Breakdown:
I use the Practice and Production Pyramid (P1, P2, P3) to structure my TEFL lessons. This method helps maximize student engagement and ensures effective language acquisition through gradual development.
P1: Presentation (Tip of the Pyramid)
This is the shortest phase of the lesson where I introduce new language concepts, vocabulary, or grammar. I provide clear examples and explanations, often using visual aids, demonstrations, and simple practice exercises. The goal is to lay a strong foundation for the new material.
P2: Practice (Middle of the Pyramid)
In this phase, students begin to practice the language in a controlled environment. I guide them through various exercises and activities, such as filling in the blanks, matching exercises, or role-playing with set dialogues. I monitor their progress, giving feedback and correction as needed. The aim is to solidify their understanding of the new language before they begin using it independently.
P3: Production (Base of the Pyramid)
This is the longest phase of the lesson and involves the most student talk time. Here, students use the language freely and creatively in real-world contexts. They may engage in conversations, debates, presentations, or storytelling. This phase allows students to apply what they've learned, boosting their confidence and language fluency. My role is to facilitate and provide guidance, but the focus is on the students using the language as much as possible.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
Warm-Up (5–10 minutes) – We begin with a brief review of previous lessons or a fun activity to engage the student and get them comfortable.
Introduction to New Material (15–20 minutes) – In this part of the lesson, I follow the P1 stage of the Practice and Production Pyramid, introducing new reading concepts or language lessons using clear examples, visual aids, and interactive tools.
Guided Practice (15–20 minutes) – We move into the P2 stage, where students practice the new material through structured exercises, with me offering feedback and support.
Independent Practice (10–15 minutes) – Students have the opportunity to engage in the P3 phase of the lesson, where they use the material independently in a more relaxed, creative way. This could involve conversations, free writing, or problem-solving tasks, depending on the lesson.
Wrap-Up & Homework (5 minutes) – I review key points from the lesson, offer positive reinforcement, and assign practice tasks for the student to complete before the next session.
