I've been doing jujutsu for 15 years. The wealth of knowledge at that school helped shed light on new ways to accomplish techniques, from the many different aikido styles that are shared by the head instructor and assistant instructors.
I would recommend training there to anyone seeking classical aikido, or more self defense oriented training.Great learning environment. Very educated sensei with many decades of experience and insights. Every class I learn something new. Everyone is really helpful and respectful of your skill level and will work with you. I always feel better about myself and the day ahead after class.
The dojo has a safe and patient atmosphere with multiple instructors
each bringing their insights to the practice of Aikido. Learning is open friendly and multidimensional. There is a spiritual quality to this art that applies to life interactions at all levels. Sensei Shanstrom is a true representation of all Aikido can be in ones life. One literally learns to roll, play and dance with any attack. For me a meditation in action to balance the week of demands and responsibilities that can often weigh me down. It is a worthy life time quest and applicible to all ages. One that does not force or overpower, rather controls and redirects into a peaceful solution. The classroom environment is fantastic, great location, and the best thing is the staff. They are incredibly friendly and flexible. If I have a day where I don't feel like giving 100%, the instructors that I'm training with will adjust to my pace. They really listen. All the instructors bring so much experience and variation to the art that it always feels like a new class. The camaraderie is tangible! There's never a day I feel unwanted. I honestly couldn't ask for a better place to learn aikido. What has stood out to me the most about this class is that almost ever lesson has influence my life outside of class. I breathing better, standing taller, and am more aware of all that surrounds me. The staff maybe teaching me a skill, but I am learning more than I even intended and I am really grateful!
These people are the best! They know their art and know how to teach it. While I'm learning a very effective martial and self-defense art, it's more about self-mastery and control. The chief instructor, David Shanstrom is a true master. I'm always glad when I go and always feel better when I leave. I wish I'd started this doing this much sooner than I did.
