About Julianne
With over ten years of training and performance experience in percussion, I can get you started on a variety of instruments, from xylophone to timpani to tambourine to snare drum. I also have an honors BA in Linguistics (summa cum laude) from the University of Rochester, with research and teaching assistant experience, a minor in Classics, and conversational proficiency in French. I love languages, history, reading, and writing, so I'm looking forward to working with you in whatever your needs might be!
For me, the best part about tutoring is that "light bulb" moment, when the student really starts to understand. It's rewarding for me and fun for the student. It's not just about passing the course or learning the skill, but about discovering nuance in the subject and learning something about yourself in the process.
I have an honors bachelor's degree (summa cum laude) in Linguistics. My honors thesis was a community-engaged study of the vowels of the Rochester Accent of English. I've been active in research in linguistics since 2016, served as a teaching assistant for three classes, and was a peer advisor for my university's linguistics department. My specialty areas are sociolinguistics, phonetics, and fieldwork. I've presented research at two national conferences (the Linguistics Society of America Annual Meeting 2019 and New Ways of Analyzing Variation 48).
I have conversational competency in French, having scored a 5 on the AP French Exam and made an effort to maintain my skills since then. As a trained linguist, I have a deep understanding of language and its structure, enabling me to find new ways to explain concepts beyond "this is just how we say this." I also have experience helping students with French, and know that this is something I am good at and enjoy doing.
I'm a strong writer, praised highly by instructors and employers. With my in-depth understanding of language, I can go ever deeper and look at all levels of the writing, from broad organization to word choice.
With a bachelor's degree in a social science, a minor in Classical Civilizations (studies in ancient history), plus further coursework in the social sciences, I have a lot of experience in these fields. I'm also a lifelong history buff and a strong writer and reader.
I have over ten years of experience learning and performing classical percussion. During that time, I have received extensive private lessons, including some at the Eastman School of Music, and performed in orchestras, concert bands, wind ensembles, and pit orchestras. I can teach a wide variety of classical percussion instruments, from four-mallet marimba, vibraphone, and xylophone to snare drum to timpani to auxiliary percussion like tambourine, claves, and cymbals.

The first thing to do is to find out where the student is: what kind of background do they have in the tutoring/lesson subject? It's then my job to work with the student to build a bridge from where they are to where they want to be. We establish a pace of work (how much do they want/need to accomplish, how much time do they have to do it, and how much outside-of-tutoring time are they willing/able to spend to get there). Then, during the course of the lessons/tutoring, we continually re-evaluate our progress and system, adapting as we go.
For percussion lessons: consider what specific area(s) of percussion you're most interested in. Drum set? Mallet percussion (xylophone, marimba, orchestra bells)? Auxiliary percussion (triangle, tambourine, bass drum)? Timpani? Find a teacher with expertise in that area.
For linguistics: consider what specific subfield your needs fall into. Any linguist should be able to help you with basics, but if you can, why not get a teacher/tutor with extra experience in the subfield you need?
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what you want/need to accomplish during your lessons/tutoring, and the timeframe in which you need/want to do that. How much time are you willing/able to spend outside of lessons to accomplish those goals?
For percussion lessons: consider what specific area(s) of percussion you're most interested in. Drum set? Mallet percussion (xylophone, marimba, orchestra bells)? Auxiliary percussion (triangle, tambourine, bass drum)? Timpani? That will help you and your teacher to focus your lessons better.
