About Melanie
My name is Melanie and I live in South Wales. In 2021-22 I had the opportunity to have a sabbatical from my job as a primary school teacher to learn how to speak and, more importantly, teach Welsh. I fell in love with the language and I'm keen to get more people involved in learning but I'm aware that many people need a little bit of support to get started. So, I'm offering my skills as a tutor in the hope that I can be a stepping stone for you into the fascinating world of the Welsh language. I have been a teacher for over 30 years, and I've taught in lots of different contexts. During Covid I learnt to teach online, which is great, as it means I can meet more people and share my skills.

Using the E.P.I. model of language learning, my lessons will provide comprehensible input, concentrating on communicative functions and related constructions. The language will be modelled through reading and listening to ensure you have the confidence to undertake the necessary oral work and you will be provided with scaffolds to support this. We will not focus on vocabulary lists, instead you will learn language 'chunks', which is proven to be a successful way to embed language in your brain! The lessons will include language games and role play. I will begin by assessing your level of Welsh language (this course is aimed at beginners), and understanding what you aim to achieve in order to tailor your language to your needs. You will learn to read Welsh, which will help you become a more effective independent learner of the language. This course is ideal for students at school in Wales (I am happy to enhance and support what you are learning in class), people applying for jobs that say 'Welsh language is desirable' or anyone who would like to build their confidence before joining a class in the 'real world'. We will focus on South Wales Welsh. Lessons are 60 minutes. I trained to speak and teach Welsh for a year at Cardiff University in 2021-22.
