Throughout my journey as a fashion illustration student and professional, I have experienced the immense joy and fulfilment that comes from creating art. This passion drives my desire to teach and share the knowledge and skills I have acquired with others. One of the most inspiring aspects of teaching is witnessing the growth and development of my students. There is a unique satisfaction in seeing a student progress from tentative first strokes to confident, expressive drawings. Each student brings their unique perspective and style, and I am inspired by their creativity and individuality. Teaching allows me to be part of their artistic journey, helping them overcome challenges, build their skills, and discover their artistic voice. Step-by-Step Instruction: Breaking down the drawing process into manageable steps helps students grasp complex concepts. This might include understanding proportions, anatomy, movement, and fabric flow.
Observation and Feedback: I emphasise the importance of observation, encouraging students to study live models carefully. I provide constructive feedback to help them improve their skills continuously.
Incorporating Fashion Elements: I integrate fashion-specific elements such as drapery, texture, and garment construction into life drawing to ensure students can translate basic drawing skills into fashion illustrations.
Encouraging Individual Style: While teaching fundamental techniques, I also encourage students to develop their unique style, fostering creativity and personal expression.
Use of Various Media: Introducing students to different drawing materials and tools, such as charcoal, pencils, ink, and digital tools, helps them discover what works best for their style and enhances their versatility.
Typical Length of a Lesson
Each lesson typically lasts between 1 to 2 hours. This timeframe is sufficient for covering new techniques, practicing with a live model, and receiving feedback without overwhelming the students. Here's a possible structure for a 1.5-hour session:
10 minutes: Introduction and demonstration of the day's technique.
50 minutes: Practice session with a live model, with ongoing feedback.
20 minutes: Focused critique and individual feedback.
10 minutes: Q&A and summary of key points learned.
