About Agil

I am Agil Pirverdiyev, a FIDE Master and FIDE-certified coach from Baku, Azerbaijan, with 15 years of teaching experience and more than 100 students, all online. I am rated 2508 rapid and 2411 classical. In 2011 I won the World Under-16 Championship, and I was also European Under-14 Champion and won a team silver medal at the Chess Olympiad. I hold FIDE coach and arbiter titles, and I have won open tournaments in Italy, Switzerland, France and Spain.

Most players who come to me are stuck somewhere and cannot see why. They know openings, they solve tactics, and they still lose the same kinds of games. In almost every case the problem is not knowledge, it is that there is no method for the moments when the position offers nothing obvious.

That is what I teach. In any position where the plan is not clear, I ask four questions. What is my worst piece? What does the pawn structure tell me? What does my opponent want? Which exchange can I force? A player who runs those four questions has a procedure instead of a guess, and the difference shows up in results long before it shows up in rating.

I work with beginners, club players and tournament players, children and adults. If you send me two or three of your recent games, I will tell you honestly what I think is holding you back before you book anything.

Lessons are one to one over webcam, and every one is built around the student's own games rather than a fixed syllabus.

A typical lesson has three parts. First we look at a recent game and find the moment the position actually changed, which is usually earlier and quieter than the move that lost material. Second we work on the idea behind that moment: a pawn structure, an endgame technique, a calculation habit. Third the student leaves with a small amount of work to do before the next lesson, so the idea gets used and not just heard.

Over time we cover openings, middlegame plans, endgame technique, calculation and tournament preparation, but in the order the student's own games call for them. I would rather fix the mistake that is costing points this month than teach a variation that may come up next year.

I work with beginners, club players and tournament players, children and adults. With younger students I keep the sessions concrete and ask a lot of questions instead of lecturing, because a child who can explain the reason for a move remembers it.

Send me two or three of your recent games, or your online profile, before the first lesson. That tells me more than any questionnaire and means the first session is already about you.

Packages: 5 lessons, or 10 lessons with one lesson free - you pay for nine, we play ten. The first lesson is free, so you can see how I work before committing to anything.
