About Chango

My name is Chango, and I am an architectural designer, educator, artist, and creative mentor with over 20 years of experience in design, community-based practice, public art, and spatial storytelling. I have taught and mentored students through university-level design studios, youth architecture programs, portfolio development, and real-world creative projects. My background includes teaching and research with the University of Minnesota College of Design, leading design studios at Juxtaposition Arts, and developing work across architecture, urban design, fabrication, cultural research, public space, and community-rooted design.

Throughout my career, I have worked with young creatives, architecture students, artists, and emerging designers at many different levels — from beginners learning how to think spatially, to advanced students preparing portfolios, presentations, applications, exhibitions, and professional creative work. I help students strengthen their design process, clarify their concepts, improve their drawings, and communicate their ideas with confidence. My lessons can include architecture studio support, portfolio review, design critique, concept development, precedent research, site analysis, urban design thinking, public art proposals, presentation boards, model-making strategy, Rhino workflow, Illustrator diagrams, InDesign layouts, Photoshop refinement, and creative direction.

My passion for architecture began at a young age through community design, art, and public space, and eventually became both my profession and my lifelong creative practice. I enjoy helping students discover the deeper potential in their ideas, overcome creative blocks, and develop work that feels clear, meaningful, and visually powerful. One of the most rewarding parts of my work is watching students gain confidence in their own design voice. Whether it’s helping a student organize their first architecture portfolio, guiding a studio project toward a stronger concept, or helping an emerging designer prepare a school application, I am committed to creating a supportive, honest, and inspiring learning environment.

I believe architecture is more than buildings, it is culture, memory, space, beauty, community, and imagination. My goal is to help every student enjoy the creative process while developing strong design skills, clearer visual communication, and powerful projects that can support them for years to come.

My teaching approach is rooted in real design practice: architecture, public space, cultural storytelling, fabrication, and community-based design. I help students understand that strong architecture is not just about making something look good — it is about building a clear concept, reading a site, understanding people, organizing space, and communicating an idea through drawings, models, words, and presentation. My goal is to help each student become more confident, more precise, and more original in how they think and make.

A typical lesson begins with a focused review of the student’s current work. We look at the project brief, drawings, sketches, models, portfolio pages, application materials, or early ideas, then identify the strongest 2–3 directions forward. From there, we create a clear action plan. Depending on the student’s needs, we may work on concept development, precedent research, site analysis, diagrams, Rhino modeling, Illustrator graphics, Photoshop refinement, InDesign layouts, presentation boards, model-making strategy, portfolio sequencing, writing, or verbal presentation preparation.

My method comes from years of teaching and mentoring in real studio environments. I have taught and supported university-level architecture studios through the University of Minnesota College of Design, including work connected to Healing Cities, urban design, public space, and community-rooted architecture. I have also led youth architecture and environmental design work at Juxtaposition Arts, where I have helped young designers move from first ideas to drawings, models, installations, and public-facing presentations. In 2025, I helped lead a University of Minnesota study abroad program in Melbourne with 17 students, focused on livable cities, design culture, architecture, and public space.

What sets me apart is that I teach from both the creative and technical sides of architecture. My work includes public art, urban design, community engagement, fabrication, cultural research, and full-scale installation. Recently, I helped lead the design and construction of a community healing pavilion with 72 structural ribs, 11 transportable sections, CNC-cut components, hand-cut plywood ribs, lighting concepts, landscape design, and public installation strategy. That kind of work shapes how I teach: I help students connect big ideas to real materials, real drawings, real sites, and real presentation skills.

I also understand portfolio development from both the student and educator side. I help students clarify their design voice, edit their strongest work, improve weak pages, sequence projects, write project descriptions, and prepare for architecture school, design school, graduate applications, critiques, reviews, and interviews. A strong portfolio should not just show images — it should tell a clear story about how you think, what you care about, and what kind of designer you are becoming.

These lessons are ideal for high school students applying to architecture or design school, undergraduate architecture and design students, graduate school applicants, emerging artists, public art applicants, and creative people who need stronger design direction. I can support beginners who are learning the basics of architecture, as well as advanced students who need sharper concepts, better drawings, stronger diagrams, and more professional presentation skills.

My lessons are honest, supportive, and highly specific. I will help you understand what is working, what is not working, and exactly what to do next. Whether we are developing a studio project, improving a portfolio, building a concept, preparing a presentation, or refining technical drawings, my goal is to help you create work that is clear, meaningful, beautiful, and ready to present with confidence.
