About Thomas
Hi, I’m Thomas. I am a dedicated tutor with a passion for deconstructing complex problems into manageable, "lightbulb" moments.
During my time at school, whilst I was passionate about Physics and Maths, they were far from my best subjects. Fast forward to my second year of university and I was earning the top grades in my year group for advanced mathematics and physics - the key change was that I had realized that the way I was taught at school was not compatible with my learning style. Having experienced this myself, I have a lot of sympathy for other students going through the same situation and an understanding on how to build the foundations they need to really understand these subjects and "how" to problem-solve.
Qualifications & Experience
I hold a First Class Honors degree in Mechanical Engineering, which provided me with a high-level understanding of advanced calculus, mechanics, and thermodynamics.
I have extensive experience helping students bridge the gap between "knowing" the material and "applying" it to achieve top-tier grades.

My Teaching Methodology
- I don’t believe in rote learning (memorization).
- Because of my engineering background, my approach is rooted in First Principles. I help students understand the why behind the formula, not just the how. My lessons typically follow the below framework:
Conceptual Foundations: We break down the theory using real-world examples and comparisons.
Guided Practice: We work through problems together, focusing on logically making our way step-by-step, pausing when things stop making sense and focusing on identifying the key areas that may need more clarity.
Lesson Structure
- Duration: Standard lessons are 60 minutes, though I offer 90-minute intensive sessions for advanced topics or exam preparation.
- Format: Interactive and adaptive. I tailor my explanations based on how the student responds, with my major focus being that no one leaves a session feeling confused or overwhelmed.
- I specialize in identifying specific "knowledge gaps" that often hold students back from moving to the next grade bracket.
I offer specialized tutoring for:
- Senior Secondary (Years 11–12): Comprehensive support for QCE Physics, Mathematical Methods, and Specialist Mathematics.
- Junior & Intermediate (Years 7–10): Building the essential mathematical foundations and problem-solving skills needed to transition successfully into senior STEM subjects.
- University Undergraduates: Support for first-year Engineering Mechanics and Calculus modules for students at UQ, QUT, or Griffith.
